Best potato chips ever...

As a lifelong lover of potato chips (who isn't?), I nonetheless haven't felt confident posting about them on Chowhound. I know there is a long history of quality chip hunting by the Big Dog and others which put my experience to shame. Until tonight.

Like all good things this one is enhanced by a mystery. Some friends of mine own a bar in Hazleton PA (Deb and Greg's Tavern on Wyoming St.) which I visit at most once a month. Tonight while I was enjoying a draft Barley Creek SuperHop Deb put an innocent-looking basket of chips in front of me. I tried one and was immediately in Nirvana. They are thick-cut, sublimely crisp, perfectly salty, perfectly potato-y and extremely rich tasting. I guessed they were fried in lard, but they had none of the slight rancidity I've always tasted in lard-cooked chips. These chips were superb.

So I asked Deb what these were and it turns out she doesn't know. They received 12 large (approx 10 gallon) cans of these chips with no identifying label. They were a gift from a friend and her understanding is they are home-made in Lancaster PA. She said they'd been a big hit in the bar and confirmed that they were indeed cooked in animal fat.

After much pestering by me (she showed me one of the cans which simply sported pictures of teddy bears) she picked up her cell phone to call the friend. I had a million questions..., well, OK, mostly just one: Where can I get these???? The friend said he had the info at work and will pass it on to Deb next week. So I don't know if this is a non-commercial labor of love, a "micro-chippery" or simply some large company's work of genius.

After demolishing the basket of chips I'm in a state of depression. These were so much better than the next best chip I've had that I'm almost in shock. They were that incredible.

Sorry to be so long-winded but these put me in the same state of euphoria as my recent BBQ experience in Lockhart TX. Yes, they were that good.

Whew.

      A Google search brings up a number of small and regional potato chip manufacturers in Lancaster County. I guess I'd want it to be the site linked below.

        mrs. howes potato chips, milwaukee, wisconsin, 1950's to 1980's(?).
        i was a kid and can't vouch for the fat they were cooked in, but there were none like them, then or since. the jingle was, not mr. howes but mrs.
        have also had good chips from pa.

              I have long searched for a great potato chip or chips in general. My taste more towards the salty/spicy chips. My favorite chips include Charles Chips (jalepeno variety), Zapp's, and Tim's Cascade (all time fav: Jalepeno or the Habanero). Living in the DC area, I have difficulty getting these chip. I've often resorted to mail order in the past but I've recently stumbled on to a real find.

              Have any of you tried the doritos Fiery Habanero? It is really spicy (I does make me sweat) and really good. And best of all, it is a national brand so I don't always have to worry about finding it. Have anyone tried this brand yet? How about the doritos Jalepeno?

                I love Tim's Cascade in jalepeno!!! Off topic but I also love Andy Capp's salsa fries, they don't sell them in markets here (SGV, CA)
