My boyfriend and I are planning on having dinner at Helmand on Saturday night. I printed the menu from Amazon yesterday and and have been drooling over it ever since. Everything just sounds so good, unfortunatley we can only order so much between two of us, can you tell me what in your opinion is a must for first timers like us? I've done some research on the boards and know we must try the Kaddo. We are both suckers for lamb and there are so many choices can you reccomend lamb entrees that are different enough for us order and not feel like we're eating the same thing? Any suggestions welcome, I figure on 2 apps and 2 entrees. Also what portion size like? Are meals served "family style" or does each person order for him/herself?

Thanks,
Kristine

We like all the starters, but the aushak and kaddo are must-haves.

I'm a real sucker for the rack of lamb, and so rarely have gotten past that for the entrees, its so good.

I've been known to make a meal of the aushak, I hate to share it, it's so good! I will split the kaddo, sometimes. Those are definitely my two favorite items.

The aushak and kaddo are my favorites, too. For dessert I really like the kulfi (whatever they call it).

If you absolutely just can't wait for Saturday night, why not try the Helmand lunch buffet (served Mon. - Fri. 11:AM - 2:30 PM) for only $9.95.

Several dishes are not only Afghan influenced, but also a few feature ingredients and preparation techniques from Persia and India.

There are several types of lamb available, including Mashawa (lamb, beans, chick-peas, black-eyed peas and a thin, yoghurt sauce); and Shorwa (lamb with a variety of very fresh veggies). There is also a wonderful rendition of Kufteh Kabob, which is ground beef with green onions, garlic, cilantro, ginger and peppers. It comes with white onions and red bell peppers.

Both the Chicken Kourma and the Lamb Kourma are also must-haves, in my opinion.

If you still find yourselves wanting to order from the main menu, just order the Rack of Lamb and the Kaddo (pumpkin baked with sugar and served over a yoghurt sauce). Shortly afterwards, you'll both be floating on your way out the door...

Enjoy!

My hubby and I eat at Helmand at least once a month. We generally order 3- 4 apps and one entree. I think that is the way to go there...

Kaddo, Aushak, Banjan are the 3 current appetizer front runners.

Kaddo, definitely, definitely! I adore it.

But I also really like the qabuli polow (spelling most likely wrong), brown basmati rice with lamb chunks, carrots, and raisins.

Portions are pretty large, but leftovers are the best part!

Order away, and have fun!
