I don't understand.

A martini has ~150-200 calories for a ~1.5 oz gin/vodka martini, not including the garnish nor ice.

Since gin/vodka has no protein nor fat, where do the calories come from. Not including the garnish, I calculate ~38-50 grams of carbs.

Does this mean, you think alcohol is not a carbohydrate ? Because I think alcohol is pure carbohydrate.

I think there are only three sources of food calories. Carbs, Fat, and Protein. Are there other sources of food calories ?

Alcohol itself has calories. I don't know the science of why some forms have more carbohydrate than others, but it may in part be the level of distillation (which would explain why gin and vodka have no carbohydrate, since they're the most thoroughly distilled). They all have calories, though.

I'm not advocating the site linked below - I found it using google - but it does show the varying carbohydrate gram count and calories for different spirits and other alcoholic beverages.

~38-50 grams of carbs, which you guessed would be in 1.5 oz of gin or vodka, is the amount in a bowl of rice or highly-sugared cereal.

Thanks for the link.

The 38-50 grams of carbs was calculated by dividing the calories in a "cocktail" by 4, the number of calories in a gram of carbs.

The chart in the link shows no carbs in alcohol. I guess that is why alcohol is considered an empty (of food value) calorie.

Thanks again.

A couple of ideas:

Prosciutto and asaparagus

Shrimp cocktail (or serve with lemon if cocktail sauce is not on the agenda)

Crudites with a lowfat/atkins friendly dip (maybe hummos, or make ranch dressing with buttermilk and non-fat mayo, onion dip with lite sour cream)

The proscuitto and asparagus idea is great, as is the shrimp cocktail. However, hummos and homemade ranch dressing is perhaps not the best Atkins-friendly idea. Most low fat products contain high fructose corn syrup - a definate no-no. Should be a definate no-no for everyone - even low-fatters.

A few ideas -

Smoked salmon, capers, lemon wedges, creme cheese for her, brown bread for you
TONS of cut broccoli, cauli and celery (low fat dip for you, creme cheese dip for her)
The most obvious - BUFFALO WINGS (bake them)- what's a super bowl party without those?

For you: baked Tostito's (or other low-fat chips) and either salsa or hummus. Also Bearitos microwave popcorn.

For the g.f.: smoked almonds and maybe some nice cheese.

For both of you: cold edamame. I buy it shelled and frozen and cook up the entire package. Salt it a bit and then chill for awhile.
