My question is: how come I didn't go to El Metate earlier? This whole time, I've been eating at the El Tonayense taco truck when I could have been eating tacos at El Metate a few blocks away.

I had three tacos: chili verde, fish, and chicken with red chile. The flavors of the chili verde and the fish were excellent, the chicken was very good but not as good as the other two. My only two nitpicky complaints were that the chili verde was a bit salty (Nathan didn't notice) and the fish taco could have used more fish and less rice. But the most important thing is that the flavors were there. The flavors lingered in my mouth after the tacos were long gone. Tacos are $1.75 each. Strawberry agua fresca was good, mango was way too dilute, $1 each.

Also, there is a relatively new taco truck at Potrero and 19th. I went there twice and it's nothing to write chowhound about, which is why I'm tacking it on to the end of the el metate news. Tacos are $1.50, they give you more meat than the El Tonayense truck, but the flavor is not as good. The carne asada was bland, the chicken was not impressive. The al pastor was fine though. I also tried the torta, $5 and they were nothing special.

Isn't it a sunny little haven? I only noticed it a few months ago driving down Bryant, and then Derek and I had tacos about a month ago that were quite good.

Seems like a perfect breakfast place, if they could be persuaded to make chilaquiles. I've been wanting to go back and try their huevos rancheros.

Once again you hounds set us on the right track-- El Metate, now here's a taqueria with soul. There's some great eating in SF, and this cheap little joint impressed us as much as any of the gustatory stars.
