Recently I was in Trader Joe's here in SF and picked up an organic dark chocolate "Dark Tuffle" bar from Terra Nostra. This bar is 57% cacao.

I consider myself more of a chocophile than say in this case a vegetarian. Okay, I'm not even a vegetarian--I tried the chocolate because it was something I hadn't had before.

It was pretty good more of a fruity chocolate taste. It's not bad...but now I'm wondering if anyone's tried other organic chocolate and likes it better than say other higher quality chocolate. I think Dagoba (sp?) and Newman make some organic chocolate...curious what other chocolatehounds might think...

I certainly wouldn't say I like it better than other, higher quality chocolate, but the Dagoba New Moon is very good. It's 74% cocoa mass. I think it's a smooth, well-rounded chocolate that's just dark enough (for me).

The Dagoba chai is also pretty tasty for a milk bar.

The Newman stuff is not impressive, but it's definitely quite edible.

Well this chowhound liked Green & Black's chocolate. I've tried the Maya Orange and thought it tasted sort of like Terry's Chocolate Orange... good enough, but nothing great, and the "spices" I could not fathom, but then I was expecting a Mexican-type spiced chocolate which this is not.

I tried the same brand from Trader Joe's but a 73% cocoa version. Thought it was quite good, but didn't like it better than other "regular" dark chocolate.

Most chocolate is actually "organic," whether they say so or not. Most cocoa bean growers in the third world are too poor to use pesticides, and too poor to buy an "organic" inspection.

There is a guy in Belgium who has an organic designation, and basically, he buys all of the organic beans on the market, blends and tempers them, then resells to all of the organic chocolate market, who reshapes, wraps and markets them. Therefore, most of the chocolate starts from the same source.

If you buy any other chocolate, not designated "organic," such as Scharffen Berger or Valrhona, you are essentially getting organic although this is not specified on their label.

If you're really looking for something tasty you should try the chocolate bark from Sitting Around Eating BonBons ... a great new little chocolate shop in Etobicoke that uses only organic and fair trade chocolate. Their bark is made with 70% dark chocolate and is delicious. Comes in a few different flavours. We had the nut lovers and it had walnuts, pecans and almonds ... sooooo good ... I just checked and they have a website too ... www.sittingaroundeatingbonbons.com ...
