Hello all,

I am coming to San Fran this wekend to visit my girlfriend. I have been to San Fran quite a bit, but not in the past two years. I was hoping that you might be able to help me out with some resto ideas. I have been trying to call slanted door but to no avail...just think that it would be a neat place to go. Was wondering about similar style of food/setting recs. I was also looking for some more romantic restos...thinking about taking her to top of the Mark for drinks and dancing after dinner...she just moved to San Fran and had never been before. All types of food are posible...have been thinking about Aqua (former partner was a fam friend, but haven't heard much since he left), Rubicon, Merenda etc... Thanks in advance for the full stomach....by the way, she is 28 and I'm 30 so nothing too stuffy.

How about an off-beat idea. (Okay, not *really* offbeat...) Absinthe on Hays, with their brasserie food and plush atmosphere always seemed romantic but not stuffy.

Haven't been in awhile, so the food might have gone downhill, but Venticello on Nob Hill is a good choice. Been there with my wife a couple of times and we enjoyed it. When I was there last they had an appetizer of pancetta wrapped prawns that was delicious ...

I strongly recommend Quince.
The room is beautifully lit and decorated with lovely displays of flowers, and much more quiet than many restuarants allowing for conversation in a normal tone.
Additionally, they have a great wine list.

I love the look and feel of Acquerello (Italian/Sacramento Street). Watching the sunset at Greens (Vegetarian/Fort Mason) can be pretty romantic, too. A little younger/kickier would be to eat outdoors at Foreign Cinema (Eclectic/Mission).

Jeanty at Jack's on Sacramento near Montgomery is a great French bistro. Food is fabulous, not too pricey especially given the quality, good wine list, nice atmosphere. Not too quiet but not too loud either.

Hip, romantic, great food, nice wine list.
The lighting is soft and wonderful, so everyone looks good!

I think Cafe Jacqueline in North Beach is the most romantic dinner spot. Souffles only - savory and sweet, with a few salads to accompany. Small, romantically lit, food to share. That was probably my favorite date my fiancee and I have ever been on.

That said, almost any good restaurant that's not extremely noisy can be romantic if you're in the mood. :-)

Ok, please help me understand, because I just don't get it! I had heard over and over about how wonderful and romantic Cafe Jaqueline was, so I took my husband (fiance at the the time) there for a special dinner. Neither of us found it romantic and we thought the food was very overpriced and not so fantastic. Maybe we are just not souffle people??? What did we miss?
