Has anyone tried Harry's Orchards grapefruit? (not Harry & David, this seems to be a separate company)

I signed up for the mail order grapefruit club and got my first shipment this week--and it was *really* underwhelming. The color was certainly red, but otherwise it fell far short of their advertising: not sweet or flavorful, even by comparison with grocery store grapefruit. In fact, if I hadn't known they weren't from the grocery store, I wouldn't have known...

Maybe this is a fluke? I'd like to have grapefruit delivered all winter, but not for this quality at these prices.

Not familiar with Harry's. The best red grapefruit is from the Texas Rio Grande valley. I deal with a little orchard in Mission TX. They don't have a web site and you have to mail them a check. (Three Palms Citrus 956-585-2463)

The quality varies depending on the time of season. I always call the grower and ask what's best. A good grower will be honest. There are a couple of different types of red grapefruit. Rio Valley oranges and lemons can be excellent IF purchased at the right time. But they don't keep well. Grapefuits seems to be more reliable and better keepers.

Maybe someone knows a good web-enabled mail order source in the McAllen/Harlingen area...

I get the ruby red grapefruit from Pittman Davis every year for X-mas, and think they are wonderful, sweet and very juicy. I grew up in Texas, and miss this great fruit, so it is a special treat to order.

I very recently picked up some Texas Star Ruby Red grapefruit at our local Farmer's Market and they were really, really good this year. You need to make sure you get either the Star Ruby Reds or the Rio Reds. This is the perfect time of the year for them. I just did a very quick search for Texas Ruby Red Grapefruits and came up with a few sites: 1)http://redcooper.com/classics.html
2)http://www.bellsfarm.com/ and http://www.valleyfruit.com/. You might consider calling them before ordering and seeing which type of grapefruit they are selling.

Or do a more thorough search - I've not tried any of these sites since I buy locally but the ones I've had from Texas this year have been very sweet.

I second Karin's reccomendation for Pittman Davis. I have been receiving a 1/2 bushel box of Ruby Reds every month November through April for years. It is a big event when the November shipment arrives, and for us it was yesterday. My first one last night was pink, sweet and wonderful. You should buy from no one else.
