If you're utilizing a good champagne, incorporating it into a bunch could render its character difficult to discern. I imagine a so-so champagne or other sparkling wine would be utilized for punch, no?

Considering the likely mixture (champagne and various fruit juices), I can't see it mattering.

After a certain number of glasses, I don't think they'll care whether it's Dom Perignon vs. Aste Spumante, or even (shudder) Baby Duck. On the other hand, they may be that kind of crowd. :-)

No, they're a bunch of savages. They're not of the food-ite type. They'd be satisfied w/a tript to the $4.99 Chinese Buffet. I'd just like to show them a little class is all...

In that case, give them Baby Duck (is that stuff still around?) or something like it. Actually, Aste Spumante is nice, if a little sweet--but it might be perfect for what you're thinking of.

I like tisana--it's a Spanish drink made much like sangria, except with Cava (or Champagne) instead of red wine.

Here's an easy recipe:

The trick to making a good sangria (or tisana) is to macerate the fruit in sugar or alcohol for a few hours. In this case, I'd cut the fruit up and mix it with the sherry and white wine and let it soak in the refrigerator for a few hours and then mix in the rest of the ingredients when it is time to serve it.

1 bottle of champagne or cava
1/4 liter of white wine
1/4 liter or sweet sherry
1/2 liter of mineral water (with bubbles)
cointreau to taste
peaches
cherries
oranges

Went to an openhouse once where the host made punch thusly: 4 bottles of bubbly, 1 bottle of brandy. With it he served crudities and cheeses.

This may be a little more deadly that what you had in mind.

Champagne-Orange Punch

12 ounce can frozen orange juice
6 ounce can frozen lemonade
1 1/2 quarts club soda
1 bottle champagne

Thaw orange juice and lemonade. Add remaining ingredients and top with sherbet.
