Hello,

Does anyone know of a place to buy grenadine syrup made with pomegranates? I remember this stuff from when I was a kid...and even then the bottles looked ancient. The products called "grenadine" now are all artificial cherry flavored. Blech!

I've recently seen advertisements for POM, a new juice product from pomegranates. You could add sugar and make your own grenadine. Maybe it is pre-sweetened.

As I recall the grenadine I used to use for cocktails thirty or forty years ago, it was an alcohol-containing syrup -- used to sweeten and color the cocktail. Tasted like cough syrup. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Has anyone tried POM?

POM is just the juce of pomegranates...NOT grenadine(which has other ingredients? I wasn't that impressed by POM and for the exhorbitant price you can extract your own juice from the fruit much cheaper. But, then, I'm not the biggest fan of straight pomegranate juice anyway.

Uses just a tiny amount, but might I recommend the Floridita? Sublime when made right; probably one of those drinks best gotten at home.

Pomegranate syrup ( grenadine) is a staple in Middle Eastern cooking. I use it in everything from sauces to salad dressing. In Miami, I have bought it in several nearby Middle Eastern groceries, but I am sure it can be ordered on the Web. This is not the same thing exactly as the grenadine syrup in Shirley Temples...it is very intense and tart/sweet.

I also like the flavor of pomegranate "molasses" as it is sometimes called, used in Middle Eastern cooking. I especially like a Persian dish called Fesenjan, chicken in a sauce of pomegranate molasses and ground walnuts.

But Grenadine is different. I guess I was wrong in thinking it was alcoholic, but I wonder how it is preserved. Maybe it's so sweet it doesn't need preservatives.

The link below yields recipes for 564 (!) drinks made with grenadine.
