I'd like to give my brother-in-law a nice single malt Irish whiskey for his birthday. He's very knowledgable on the subject and I'm not. Can anyone suggest something particularly fine or unusual? My budget is around $40-50.

I don't have time to go to Ireland :-) So it would have to be from an NJ liquor store or fast mail order.

Many thanks!

P.S. I found an old General Topics thread that covered mostly bourbons at http://www.chowhound.com/boards/general17/messages/60815.html

just came back from ireland and was at the jameson distillery.

i believe a potstill (sp?) is similar to a single barrel/small batch. might see if you can find something with that on the label. i'm not an expert so i'm really not sure.

also, middleton very rare is a good irish whiskey but don't think it fits your price range (unless you can find a smaller bottle but don't know if they sell them)

Two good Irish single malts are Bushmills 10 yr old single malt (around $30) and Tyrconnel pure pot still single malt (around $25-27). Being an avid whisky drinker, I really think the single malt Scotches are far superior, but of course it's a matter of what one likes. If you do consider single malt Scotches I would recommend Arberlour 15 yr old Sherry wood finish (about $40), Highland Park 12 or 18 yr old ($40-50) or The Macallan 12 or 18 yr old ($40-60). And btw, Tullamore Dew I believe is a blend, not a single malt (taste the difference!).
