Hi Chowhounds,

about a year and a half ago, I asked if anyone had tried or heard of deep fried twinkies? I am just wondering if anyone has tried them since then. Apparently, it is some new type of craze and I have scene articles on CNN, New York Times, LA Times et. etc. on how popular they are. Apparently, they have them at state fairs and certain restaurants. I have heard a lot of people say they taste better fried. I am amazed at how much news coverage this has generated.

We've tried them at the Orange County (CA) fair this summer. They're ok, IMO. I much prefer deep fried Snickers bars and fried Oreos to the Twinkies.

In fact, we ripped off the Snickers bars concept and served this at a cafe I used to work at. These sold amazingly well.

Do you freeze the snickers first? do they melt when you fry them? What does it taste like?

I've had a deep fried Snickers bar (or maybe it was a Milky Way?) NO - wait! It was a Mars bar!! It was at Chip Shop in Brooklyn. The bar is covered in thin batter, not too too crispy. The inside is somewhat gooey, but it holds its shape. I think they sprinkled it with powdered sugar. I ate it with a knife and fork on a plate.

I'm a chocolate bar maniac and the concept sounded great to me, but I discovered that it was a bit much. I wouldn't order it again, preferring instead to eat my Mars bars raw.

We used room temp candy bars (I liked ones with crunch, like 100 Grand bars) skewered, dipped in a sweet batter, then fried. It won't hurt to freeze them, but you don't need to.

You can purchase deep-fried Twinkies at the Chip Shop, 383 Fifth Avenue (b/w 6th and 7th St) in Park Slope, Brooklyn. It'll set you back #3.00 (can't estimate the toll on the arteries, tho'). It's right up there with the deep-fried Cadbury Creme egg at A Salt and Battery in Manhattan.

Frying might or might not help the taste, but it certainly couldn't hurt it.

Here's a thread on fried foods at this year's New York State Fair.

After a dinner at a promising-looking diner that turned out to have some of the worst huevos rancheros in Southern California, I actually had one of the better desserts I've had all year--a plate of twinkies dipped in pancake batter, deep fried until they looked almost burnt, covered with vanilla ice cream and strawberry grand marnier sauce.

I had one at the Iowa State Fair this vear, and couldn't finish it. I wasn't too impressed with the deep fried oreos, either. I think I'll stick to deep fried mars bars and cheesecake (which is one of the world's best desserts).
