Went to fifth floor with a non-foie eater on a night where we both wanted a solid meal but not a night of total excess (either nutritionally or financially). Can it be done?

Amuse

Raw shrimp in a lobster sauce with mint and; foie and chicken liver terraine with chutney.

Starter:

(note: amazing shortcoming of non fish/veg appetizers!!)

Baby Greens by White Crane Ranch w/Macadamia vinaigrette and 25 yr balsamic vinegar (16) - very tasty and a nice starter but was the one dish that struck us as a bit pricey as no significant labor/artistry went into it

and

Crabmeat and Avocado - Dungeness crabmeat infused w/jalapeno and basil, avocado salad (17) - most creative dish of the nite. Never have been a fan of gelatin before but the citrus element was awesome. Presentation and taste sensations were unbelievable surprises.

3rd

Atlantic Halibut - soked with Jasmine tea, spring vegetables and shellfish -foie gras jus (38). Solid-rice noodles were odd, no veggies that i can recall other than a tad of rapini? 1 lobster knuckle="shellfish", but halibut was absolutely
awesome

and

Maine Lobster - Slowly poached in a rich blood orange broth, mushroom, sweet and sour reduction (42). being from new england, never seem to get lobster in SF but this was the dish of the night, although NOT for the big appetite!!

Dessert

complimentary trio of rhubarb corn tart, ridiculously decadent chocloate truffle and some mousse thang

Wine

2002 Lucia Pinot Noir (90)

tab: $200 for 2, before tax/tip.

It was a solid Santa Lucia pinot, which I enjoy very much -- so, lots of round fruit, soft tannin, very approachable. $90 on their list. It retails for about $35 to $40 so a hefty markup!

They did bring it to the table much too warm so we waited about 20 min to try it again.

The waiter didn't take the cues that I would love to talk to the sommolier and instead I got the "yeah, I have heard it is good but havent' tried it". Clearly, I wasn't a serious enough wine buyer at the $90-$100 range!!

The last few pages of their wine list has less expensive wines, under the heading "Gems".

I don't understand your statement about cues: why not just say to the waiter that you would like to consult with the sommelier?
