I'm doing research for an article on regional sodas that still exist today, and am trying to identify as many of them as possible -- preferably old brands, not the new microbrew-ish sodas. Here's a sampling:

- Manhattan Special (NYC)
- Moxie (New England)
- Vernor's (Michigan)
- Green River (northwest)
- Blenheim's (N.Carolina)
- Cheerwine (Carolinas)
- Buffalo Rock (Alabama)
- Kentucky Nip (Appalachia)

Anyone care to add any others? Ideally, I'm looking for single-flavor brands, like those listed above, but multiple-flavor product lines (like Polar, a Boston-based regional brand with a full line of flavors) are OK too.

Thanks!

I was gonna mention Rock Creek, also Cherry Smash and Tiger Brand Ginger Ale, all from DC. Haven't seen Upper 10 or Teem in many years. Sioux City Sarsparilla and Royal Crown Cola (RC) you still see occasionally. Materva and Matebeer I haven't found since I left South Florida a few months ago. You still find Click and Mr. Pibb in the Midwest. My favorite of all is SPA Lemon, but it's from Belgium and probably wouldn't count.

You can find Materva at almost any of the many latin groceries in DC and quite a few of the supermarkets in Latin neighborhoods (like Columbia Heights, Petworth or Mount Pleasant). Tastes like cough syrup to me, but my SO loves the stuff.

Has anyone mentioned Dr. Enuf fr/ East Tennessee?
Too bad Bludwine/Budwine out of Athens/Watkinsville, GA is no longer being bottled. They finally quit bottling in '95 but would be ideal for your article.
Royal Crown out of Columbus, GA is fast becoming a regional soft drink. It seems to have lost much national attention recently.

my parents bring me cases when they visit. Last I was in central PA, you could still get 4-packs of the glass quart bottles that had an integrated rubber stopper (deposit for return of course) and silk-screened label art. That is heartwarmingly awesome. My brother and I used to soundly dismiss every variety of A-Treat brought into the house except the lauded Grapefruit (well, "Treat-Up", their knock-off of 7-Up was drinkable, and the ginger-ale was acceptable in a generic sort of way)

A traditional drink in the NorthWest is Portland Punch. It's not a soda pop, it's a punch base which you mix about 5 to 1 with water, and anything else the mixer wants to put into the punch bowl (like soda water). The flavor is blackberry, and it works with both kids and grownups. My sister just brought me a bottle of it.

I vote for Detroit Al's suggestions, but there was also Towne Club--had sites in the Motown metro area ( I remember the one in Berkley). You got a wooden crate case and went all around the store to get a huge variety of flavors of pop (birch beer, black cherry, cream soda, orange, rock'n rye, blackberry, lemon/lime, strawberry, root beer, grape, grapefruit, etc). Very cool glass bottles. They were available locally a couple years back, which were a great hit with my then grade schoolers--they were awed by the glass bottles and the wood crate, not to say the flavor variety, but seem to have disappeared since. Anybody know where they are anywher ein the area?

Towne Club is still available at some local ( Detroit area ) stores , sadly , I think it is only to be had in plastic 1/2 liter bottles . My wife and I ran a small gourmet store in Ferndale a few years back ( Lagniappe ) , we carried Towne Club in bottles , they shipped it in the same old glass bottles and wood cases we know and love , it was one of our best sellers . I still have many cases of empty glass bottles in my garage . No one seems to know who will take them back , last I heard , Holiday market in Roseville might still carry the stuff , but I doubt it . Man , I miss picking out my own case of pop at that Berkley store . One of my favorite childhood memories .

this one is real regional--it's in one restaurant! but its an old restaurant--cleveland's polish chowhound favorite SOKOLOWSKI'S. they have their own soda --in bottles in an ice bin next beers as they should be-- that you grab in the cafeteria style line. several funky styles, my fav is green apple. i think they have been doing that for quite a long time.

You've already mentioned Moxie, which can still be found around New England. Another worth mentioning is Twin Lights Ginger Ale (a very dry, light ginger ale), produced in Rockport, MA and sold only in Rockport and Gloucester. It comes only in glass bottles, and I'm told the bottler won't sell to out-of-towners since he is afraid he won't get the bottles back. The bottles are beautiful and the label depicts the Thatcher's Island lighthouses. They have a small line of other flavors but the ginger ale is the most popular. In recent years the bottler has been buying up bottles from other defunct soda companies and using them, so when you look in the soda case, you can get an idea of the incredible selection of regional sodas available a generation ago.

Another regional ginger ale is "Chelmsford", which used to be sold regionally by (I think) a Canada Dry affiliate. The ale was medium dark, caramelly, and sweet (not quite as sweet as Vernor's, I recall).

Both of these were still available within the past few years, altho' either or both may have disappeared by now -- I don't look for them regularly.

PS -- are you Paul Lukas of "Beer Frame" fame?

I can't believe someone used "soda pop" and "Moxie" in the same post! The non-New England stuff may be "soda pop" but Moxie is definitely "tonic."

It all started out as tonic, evidently. Researching an upcoming trip to New Orleans I found this site for the Pharmacy Museum there. If you click on Tour and Page 2 it tells about how soda fountains originated in pharmacies, where pharmacists mixed medicinal tonics with flavorings and soda water dispensed through the fountains.

I think Bireley's is local to the Philadelphia area. As a kid we always had botles of Orange and Grape around, which I thought tasted better if you mixed half a bottle of each together.

Apple Beer soda has been "brewed" since the '60s by a small family-run operation in Utah. It's supposedly based on an old Bavarian apple drink. Absolutely delicious...it was my favorite soda when I was young...until they started making Cherry Beer (yum!). Sadly, Cherry Beer is no more.

A few years ago, the MBA daughter took over the family business and repositioned the brand as a premium, glass-bottle, "micro-brew" style soda.

Luckily, I've been able to find it at two locations in LA, but I believe it's still largely a Utah thing.

I was lunching with a friend today who drifted off into a conversation about his Dad's soda bottling company in Cleveland in the 40's...Mesi Bottling Company. He was in a reverie of syrups, CO2, and water, glass bottles, wooden cases, etc. I remembered this thread and promised to post about his memories~to see if anyone here remembers his Dad's company. OK, Hounds...anybody old-ish from Cleveland?
