As you might imagine, bottles of 60-year-old single malt whisky are extremely rare, as are bottles of younger whisky bottled 60 years ago (they are two different things, and the younger whisky bottled 60 years ago is probably the rarer of the two).

I have seen some bottles of sixty-year-old Mortlach on sale at Whisky Web for something over $10,000, and a bottle of 60-year-old Macallan recently sold for more than $15,000, the highest price ever paid for a bottle of single malt. I've provided a link to Whisky Web should you have this much to spend.

Assuming you are not willing to pay so much for a birthday gift a better idea might be to buy a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue. This blended scotch, though the age on the bottle is 15 years (lable age is the age of the youngest whisky in the blend), reportedly includes some 60-year-old single malt. Johnnie Walker Blue is available at most good liquor stores and will cost between $225 and $250 a bottle.

A 30 year old bottle of The Macallan is one of the finest Scotches available on the market, and it is much cheaper and much better than ANY blended whisky, be it Johnny Walker or whoever. The Macallan is a Speyside scotch and is on the sweeter side. Other considerations would be an old bottle of Highland Park (combination of peat and some sweetness) and Bowmore (pure peatiness, think iodine). All are great and depend on the taste of the one receiving it.

I am very familiar with all the whiskies you mention, but the original poster asked specifically about 60-year-old whisky and it was that query I was attempting to mention.

Yes, the 30-year-old Macallan is a fine whisky though, in all honesty, I think it tastes too much of the barrel. I'm a big fan of Highland Park, less so of Bowmore. But give me a dram of Talisker and I'm a happy man.

I have 2 recommendations for you. The Wine & Liquor Depot in Van Nuys, 818-996-1414, reputedly has several hundred single malt scotches on hand, but hasten to add I've not been there myself.
Second, go to www.smwsa.com, which is the Scotch Malt Whiskey Society of America. I think they have a few bottles of the requisite age. It is a membership club, but I think they will sell to non-members.
Good luck and let us know what you chose.

Sorry if I'm misinformed, but my information comes from the "shop" page of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society website. I've included a link so you can verify my info. If this is no longer true I'd urge the society to update their website.
