I love eating fish but recently since taking up scuba diving and seeing the devastation fishing does, I have tried to stop. (A major concession as I love nothing better than to eat a plate of sushi). Our local paper had an article on seafood this week and pointed out a web site which I believe will help me to eat fish again without feeling like I am driving them to extinction. I thought perhaps other like minded hounds may also want to explore these sites.
http://www.seafoodchoices.com and http://www.environmentaldefense.org/seafood/fishhome.cfm . Both sites have a list of commonly seen fish and whether they are over fished or their farming causes harm. I feel now that armed with this information I can order tilapia and catfish as a seafood choice without feeling terrible.
I try not to put my opinions on eating seafood out there and hope you realize I am posting this as a resource not a sermon. Oh and for the eco-friendly choices they also have recipes for cooking the fish.

If anyone feels compelled to discuss the political/scientific issues raised in this posting, please do so on our Not About Food board so we can keep this board chowcentric (feel free to post a "heads up" here to let people know to join you over there). Better, though, would be to just let it pass, as we've done that flame war myriad times now without a single mind (on either side) being changed.

JEM's posting contains an actual chow tip, so it's a fine contrib to this board, regardless of underlying issues.

Monterey Aquarium's Seafood Watch website, link below is also an excellent site. They have a wallet sized reference card that you can carry with you.
