What Goes with Chicken Piccata?

Hi. I'm making my boyfriend chicken piccata for Valentine's Day, and am stumped as to what to serve with it other than boring rice. Does anyone have any suggestions for sides? Starches and/or veggies appreciated.

Marcella Hazan has a wonderful and simple recipe for cubed potatoes pan fried in butter and oil. Crusty on the outside and soft inside. Nice with the lemon sauce, I think.

Better yet, fry them in rendered duck or goose fat. Yum! Also, I love a fennel and blood orange salad dressed with a basalmic/olive oil vinegarette.

How about a wild mushroom risotto? Or a spinach risotto? I'm definitely thinking risotto...

How about some asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes or steamed haricot verts or green beans amandine and garlic mashed potatoes or fresh broccoli or spinch dressed with olive oil, lemon juice, a little parmesean and garlic mashed potatoes....you get the idea. You could do any kind of mash but garlic just seems to go well. Or you could do scallop potatoes or something similar. You specifically said no rice...You could also do a side dish of orzo dressed up in various ways or angel hair pasta with a little EVOO and fresh chopped tomato (or sun dried) and basil. Many other variations but keep it fairly simple - you don't want to overwhelm the picatta - did I say garlic mashed potatoes?

We usually do some sort of nicely shaped pasta, like gemelli or capanelle (my favorite) seasoned as several posters have indicated above. Rice does seem boring with such a wonderfully flavored entree. We're doing beef tenderloin with a balsamic reduction sauce and garlic mashed potatoes for Valentine's Day.

How about some savory bread pudding? Maybe wildmushroom bread pudding?

Or a potato gratin or gallet?

Roasted Veggies; i.e. Potatoes, garlic, onions. and carrots. When nice and carmelized and golden, put chicken in middle of pretty platter with veggies all around....... Its a good change and cuts out some of the starchy carbs, to save room for dessert !

Usually serve piccata over mashed potatoes or pasta with spinach cooked in garlic and butter.

Artichokes. They can be eaten in a very sensuous manner.
