Depends on what you mean by "healthful". It has some more fiber and nutrients. A little harder for some to digest.

Marginally on both counts.

A benefit of whole wheat is that it has more fiber. This is good for most people. Those with certain GI problems are the exception as fiber causes irritation to them (rare, but true).

According to my nutritional software, the whole wheat pasta has a slight edge on health advantages. A 55 gram serving of plain pasta has 1.3 grams of fiber while the whole wheat pasta has 4.6 grams -- which helps to reach the 28 gr. avg. daily goal. The whole wheat pasta has a slight advantage in protein value - 7.0 gr for plain and 8.1 gr for whole wheat for the same serving size.

Seems like it's worth eating if you enjoy the taste, but might not do enough for you to make you want to choke it down if you don't enjoy it!

I was also under the impression (quite possibly incorrect though) that certain types of whole wheat based pasta would also have less carbs than that in your typical processed, bleached flour pastas.

I'm not getting into the whole Atkins thing, I'm just sayin' ...

Not less carbs, but more complex ones and therefore harder to digest.
