i don't drink rum but i need to buy a decent bottle. i thought appleton was the best brand. however, some jamaican friends told me there were much better brands, many of which could even be purchased here in new york. i did not catch the names of the brands because this lead to lots of off-topic discussion. does anyone know? or does anyone have a brand made in another country they like and would rec? thanks.

Try Mount Gay rum. I don't think it's very expensive, but it has a nice spicy flavor without being actually spiced. It's a medium-dark rum. I believe rum has been produced under that name for a very long time, but I'm not sure if it's been the same continuous business. I don't like rum very much, but I enjoy Mount Gay in certain things.

Appleton Estate; in Jamaica I've seen ~9-10 year-old Appleton that was nearly as peaty tasting as whiskey and excellent for sipping. Mount Gay from Barbados is good too.

Wray & Nephew make my least favorite rum, the white overproof that's 80% alcohol (160 proof). Yikes!

Mount Gay, my favorite brand, has at least four different styles. I have used the light (white), dark, sugar cane, and Very Old Barbados Rum. All excellent values, and all very tasty on the rocks, or?
Also, while in St. Thomas, in the mid 80's, you could bring back 5 bottles of liquor, or 6 if one was a USVI product. As a number 6, most touristas brought back the Cruzan Rum, made in St. Croix. At the Frenchman's Reef hotel, where x and I stayed, the Cruzan 750ml was $1.85. Being a bargain hunter, I saw it in a Pueblo(?) Supermarket ad for $1.15. At $1.15 for a 750ml Cruzan, no wonder the locals drive sooooo bad!!!

I second Flor de Cana from Nicaragua - so smooth and wonderful. It's hard to find in the US, but worth seeking out. Some liquor stores will special order it.
Botran from Guatemala is also first rate. The anejo is amazing for sipping. However, I have yet to find it in the States.
