I have a old-style copper Mongolian hotpot that requires charcoal to heat up the water. Does anyone know where I can find natural charcoal via mail order? Natural charcoal looks like pieces of black burnt wood and they gives off little smoke.

Thanks!

What you are looking for is "hardwood charcoal", rather than briquettes, and is widely available. It tends to burn hotter and faster, but you are mistaken in assuming that it will not give off smoke. Carelful, also, as you will also get carbon monoxide, so make sure you have ventilation.
You should be able to get it locally wherever bbq/grilling supplies are sold in your area. I can get it here in some supermarkets too.

We use sterno in ours. It doesn't harm the hotpot, and doesn't make any difference to the flavor of the broth.
