Whatever happened to Team Flakes?
Does anyone know if Nabisco still makes Team Flakes? I have not seen them in years and they were one of my favorite cereals. A four grain flake of corn, oats, rice and wheat. The closest thing I know of now is Crispx, which I like but not as much as Team Flakes. Am I alone in my longing for Team Flakes or are there other like minded souls out there in the universe?

It doesn't appear that anyone in this thread has tried the Kellogg's cereal "Product 19" which is a 4 grain cereal with malt and vitamins that for all practical purposes is a match for TEAM. It even has that famous long lasting crunch in milk. Let me know what you think.

Had no idea that there were so many people sad about the loss of what I thought was the best flake cereal EVER.
While I have tried many of the cereals listed in this post, and I do LIKE many of them, I certainly don't love any of them like Team.
Although there is IMHO no replacement for Team Flakes, I have found a similar multi-grain flake cereal at WalMart called Multi Grain Flakes. The flavor is no where near as delicious, the texture is similar, and since Team Flakes will probably never return, what choices do we have?

Go to Kraft.com, to the bottom of the page to "Contact". I left them a message asking for them to bring back my favorite cereal, Team Flakes. There really is no other cereal like it. Really does stay crunchy in milk.

re: Lisa1958
Thanks, Lisa! I just did, too. Lets all go to the Ralcorp site and tell them how much we want our TEAM flakes back. The only way we're going to get our TEAM flakes back is if we stop talking to each other and start more people talking directly to the people who can make them for us. Let's get serious and post this on our Facebook pages. http://ralcorp.com/Contact%20Us/

re: debbydu
Interesting idea! Maybe they think they can't market the cereal any more in major grocery stores, but if they thought there was a devoted following that would buy it over the internet, they might reconsider.... I think Walmart.com ships cereals through their website. http://ralcorp.com/Contact%20Us/ Let's rattle their cage and post this on Facebook and tell them WE WANT OUR TEAM BACK!!!!

From what I can tell by the images, Nabisco is the one who made Team Flakes. I was born in 72 and I've been dying for Team Flakes forever. Lately, Post's Maple Pecan Crunch reminded me of it. I also remember Post's Toasties cereal. Kinda like a very thin corn flake, but nothing beats Team.
There's a facebook page for it! It said Nabisco cereals became Post! Can someone please try that MPC cereal I mentioned? Post's website says it has four grain flakes....

re: dg1972
I was/am a HUGE Team Flaker. AND I think I've found just about the closest proxy to the original recipe....My wife is from Portugal and Kellogg's produces Special K for the local market (I don't know if it's the same as the rest of Europe or not). It is virtually nothing like the Special K we know in the US. I couldn't put my finger on why I love them so much, but the more I think about it, the taste and texture are very, very close to the original Team Flakes we all are jonesing for. Now all we need to do is to rent a shipping container.....

re: bebo1068
Hey bebo1068, My daughter moved to Europe. On next visit will check that out for sure. Better yet she will be visiting soon will have her scope out for me and perhaps bring me a treat.
Just don't understand why they are not made anymore considering some of the junk cereals that are made!-
re: debbydu
I've found a couple of extra links online that say Curves Whole Grain crunch is also a match? I also love the fact that this thread begain in 2002, I first posted in it in 2009, and the discussion still continues. I doubt there are many out there that are as obsessed with any cereal lol. I don't think we get the Curves stuff in Canada, but I am going to try the Special K Oats and Honey.

Per Wikipedia, Kraft Foods sold its cereal division (including Post cereal) to Ralcorp Holdings in November of 2007, so we should all try to contact Ralcorp and beg them to start making Team cereal again!

re: surviver
Team was big in the 1960's, and, when I called to ask why I wasn't finding it in the stores, it was over thirty years later, in the 1990's, a generation-and-a-half later. My kids wouldn't have a clue about it, except that I bought it for breakfast, and for recipes (made a terrific coating for chicken, great topping for casseroles, etc), but there friends didn't know about it. I asked the representative from Nabisco (maker of Team at the time) and was told there were too many new cereals on the market and that kids just didn't care.
Reminded them of the "new" marketing campaign for Corn Flakes, "Try them again for the first time..." and was told to give it up, that it wasn't going to happen. Well Corn Flakes is still on the shelves, due to a wonderful advertising campaign, but they just didn't care enough about Team to even try. How can an item sell if people don't even know about it? Ads, coupons, and commercials all help to sell a product, not just a wish and a prayer. They, Nabisco, let it die because they didn't care. Unfortunately, those of us who remember and loved the cereal, we are the ones to suffer. They moved on to new and ridiculous sugary, colorful cereals that kids love, for which they can demand a 400% mark-up. And the best is gone.

By this time we all know Team Flakes are and have been gone. Through the years I too have tried some to hope and wish were even close to Team (i.e. Crispix, NutriGrain). I want to tell you all that I have found a cereal that I truly believe is 'Team' reincarnated!! It is Special K oats & honey, which is one of their new flavors. I can't wait to hear your replies!!

re: Taylen
Taylen, we tried Special K Oats & Honey and, though it was very tasty, it doesn't taste like Team. Special K Oats & Honey is much sweeter than Team was, and it doesn't contain that wonderful multi-grain flavor of Rice, Wheat, Corn, and Oats, with a slightly malt-flavored coating, which is what, I think, kept the flakes so crispy to the bottom of the bowl. My husband enjoys Wheaties, and this new version of Special K reminds me of a crispier, sweeter version of that flaked cereal, but definitely not Team. How I truly miss that cereal and wish a duplicate could be found but alas, not yet. Maybe one day...but thanks for trying and alerting us all to the possibility of again enjoying that wonderful Team taste. Meanwhile, we'll just have to keep searching.

re: papawdon
I can't believe that nobody can find team flakes or anything that tastes remotely like them. The only other cereal I recall loving and wishing I could find was Mr. Wonderful's Surprise...does anyone recall that one? They were little round balls filled with sweet creamy something...

Whoa, I hear you. I miss Team Flakes--the crunch and the flavor. I've tried to find them via the web but no luck. They were the best! Now I'm having a total craving. Does anyone remember grape-flavored Wheaties or Grapenuts Flakes? They would have been around in the mid 60s. Just some of the flakes were grape the others were wheat. Or am I making this up?

HUGE *sigh* of relief! My sister and I, 1982 and '84, found this post while trying to , for the umpteenth time, locate a box of Team Flakes. Despite our unsuccessful attempts at fulfilling our constant cravings for that delicious, flakey cereal,....we seem to have stumbled upon a group of kindred spirits. We live in Canada and team flakes was around until we hit high school... Terry Fox was on the front of the box. If anyone, anywhere obtained a box of this cereal (or even a sample sized box)... no price is too high. However, we find that the Special K with berries cereal has a similar texture and taste, but not as durable in a bowl of milk. I would fully support a petition to Nabisco / Kraft to produce this Fantastic cereal again.

It's wonderful to know that I'm not the only crazy one wishing for a cold cereal that disappeared in my youth. Unfortunately, I only remember my love of it and my disappointment when they removed it from the shelves. It must have been one hell of a cereal b/c I can't think of any other food, in any category, that I am wistful for. However, it's depressing to know we are lamenting into the wind. Thank you all for suggesting approximates - I'll give them a try.

re: mamachef
They were a favorite of mine too. I still look for them every time I shop in a new grocery store. I didn't know for sure they were no longer made until now. :(
I also loved Alpen (made by a U.K. company which also makes Weetabix) which I rediscovered a couple years ago at SuperTarget. Alas, they no longer carry it. A web search reveals it can be ordered from Amazon, pretty pricey though.

Thank you all for not making me feel crazy for constantly searching for Team. I admit that I feel silly looking for them every time i hit the cereal aisle. (File under "Hopeful Creature")
Closest I have found is Kashi's Strawberry Fields (ignore the strawberry part.) I don't think it has nearly the nutrition value Team had... but the flakes are similar. -
Born in '57 here ...
I can't even imagine how many times I've walked down a cereal aisle lamenting the loss of Team Flakes. I was a year-round distance swimmer during my high school and college years. At times, I was swimming 10-12 miles a day. My appetite was voracious.
I generally ate a box of Team Flakes every day, a half box in the morning, a half box at night. Not only was the cereal the tastiest by far, it was also fairly entertaining. One of my brother's classmates had a collection of very large flakes that he kept in some type of container. I was too hungry to save any of them, but on occasion I was tempted. Some of those flakes were huge.
I could never get my dad to try them. He was a committed Corn Flakes guy. It was always a major disappointment to find those in the cupboard when my mom was between trips to the market.
Maybe a T-Shirt campaign is in order. Those were the days ... indeed!

I loved Team Flakes!! Why don't we start a letter writing campaign???? I'm in! Really they were the only tasty flake type cereal that stayed crunchy. Gosh do I miss em! Keep me posted!

I just saw Hometown Favorites on Food Network and was hoping against hope to find Team Flakes. But alas, they are on the list of permanently discontinued items. I really miss the slightly sweet crunchiness. Absolutely a fave from my childhood. What would it take to bring them back?

Four Grain Team Flakes was my absolute fave growing up as well, but it's nowhere to be found. I've heard that a similar product exists that tastes much the same. Original "Total" cereal by General Mills is suposed to be the closest thing - according to my Grandmother. I'm going to seek it out one day and try it.

Michael
Team flakes was the only cereal I would eat as a kid and I ate them up until they stopped selling them. I miss them so much I wish they would make them again. My kids never got to try them. My husband would make fun of me when I ate them but would always pick some up when he found them in a store.

I LOVED Team Flakes and have looked in vain for them for years. I used to eat a big bowl with milk after school and it kept me happy and satisfied til dinner!
It's great to see other lovers of this great cereal out there too, but sad to realize it's no longer around! I will try some of the other substitutes mentioned , but... -

This whole thread has brought a tear to my eye. I don't want Nutri Grain, I don't want Curves Whole Grain Crunch... I want Team Flakes!!!
My wife doesn't understand me and sometimes she makes fun of me when I talk about them (yes, I still talk about them. I can't help it).
Finding a group of like-minded people has done me a world of good. It's been very therapudic. Thank you all - group hug!!›1 Reply -

<Sighs> I remember Team Flakes with relish. I loved their crispy goodness. I just ate a bowl of Smart Start and the flakes in it reminded me of Team flakes. There is no taste quite like them. They were so yummy. I loved the flavor. The blends of corn, oats, rice and wheat combined to dance a flavorful jig on my tastebuds. If they made them today, I would buy them in cases. Nabisco, now Kraft Foods, discontinued them in the mid 1990s. At that time the Nabisco cereal lines (owned by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco) were sold to Kraft Foods/Post (owned by Philip Morris Tobacco). I know my husband would think I was a loon for missing a breakfast cereal, but I do. It was just that yummy.

OMG!!I thought I was all alone in my dreams of having a "Jethro" size bowl of TEAM flakes. I haven't been able to scracth that itch in 20 years. My wife and I were sking in Tahoe right after we got married when we went grocery shopping. I found TEAM flakes on the shelf and my new wife started to wonder why this man she had just married was getting so worked up over a "box of cereal".TEAM was never just a "box of cereal" .
-
Michael, no, you're not alone. I was born in late 1962 and my dad raised my brothers and I on Team Flakes crispy goodness. About 15 years ago, I called Nabisco and asked them why they never advertise this wonderful cereal anymore, to reintroduce it to the children of a new generation, and I was told that there were many new cereals out there and competition was ferocious. I reminded them that Corn Flakes had recently begun a new ad campaign, "Try them again for the first time," to introduce them to our children of the '90's, and the ad was amazingly successful. Why not Team? I was told it wasn't going to happen. I just went to the Kraft website (they now own the rights to Nabisco, the company which made Team Flakes) and there is no where to post a comment or request to reintroduce this wonderful cereal, only a list of frequently asked questions, none related to Team Flakes. I miss that wonderful 4-grain taste. The only flavor I've found that's remotely close is the rare 4-grain Chex cereal, which maintains the flavor of Team, but not the flaky texture. I also LOVED that the cereal stayed crispy to the bottom of the bowl, a huge treat. And their recipe for Team Flakes Chicken (on the side of the box) was our favorite, hands down. I still make it today, but I use Special K, the closest flake cereal to offer an even remotely similar flavor and texture to Team. How I wish there were a way to encourage Kraft Foods to consider reintroducing this wonderful cereal, in light of today's healthier eating goals. Such a wonderful memory.

re: Chocolatechipkt
my older sister moved to Dallas in '81. Team Flakes were still available but had disappeared from shelves around Pittsburgh by then. That was a good visit to Texas that time. Some months went by and I asked her to send me a box, but they were gone. Now, I mix and match cereals in the same bowl - trying to recapture that Team taste. I use Life and Rice Chex as a base, with a dash of whatever else is there... a good one is Peanut Butter Cap'nCrunch and maybe even a Rice Krispie or two.
Watch your iron, cereal lovers tend to get too much.

I am another one who longs for Team Flakes. I rely on Crispix these days. I jst haven't found anything else close to the texture of Team Flakes. The only other cold cereal I enjoy is plain old Corn Flakes, and the enjoyment of them palls after a couple of days straight.... Crispix doesn't lose its appeal, but I wish I had more options!
-
You know I thought I was the only one that ever wondered about "Team Cereal"! I loved that cereal ! It was one of my favorite cereals, too. I don't know why they stopped making it! Your right Michael I've longed for them also and haven't seen them in years, so your not alone on this.
I always ask someone if they remember Team cereal ?They were the crunchiest cereal and not too sweet and even stayed crunchy in milk. I even thought of writing to the company who made them to bring them back! -
-
I was starting to think I was crazy for missing Team Flakes!!! Looks like there's ALOT of us out there! I loved how crispy-crunchy they were and stayed that way in milk to the bottom of the bowl. I liked them too 'cause they weren't too sugary. I haven't tried any of the other suggested "similar" cereals mentioned in some of the blogs here, but I eat Smart Start frequently and find the lasting crunch similar. But nothing has really replaced it. I agree w/ the blogger who suggested we all write/e-mail our heartfelt wishes to have the original recipe put back into production.

I'm a Team Flaker too, born in 59. They were the best plain flavour, and with a little Nestle Quick in cold milk, or hot chocolate in the winter (mom made it with Hershey's cocoa (never the right sugar cocoa comb. (thank the man for the cereals (Rice Chex, Special K, Rice Krispies (which was mince meat in a half a second in hot chocolate) and Team Flakes. They kept their crisp well in the hot chocolate.

General Mill's Curves Cereal Whole Grain Crunch UPC 0 16000 19806 7

It's a sad, sad story...but I don't know what it is. I've been missing my Team Flakes for years. Hometown Favorites lists them on their "Boy, they were good, but..." list of discontinued products (link below). I do occasionally find other items listed there, but Team Flakes really do appear to be gone. Maybe if we all asked Nabisco to bring them back...
