and fit for this board?

This question is especially for Mr. Chino Wayne, since I have seen him post about his liquid diet. But all other are more than welcome to add comments.

Sometimes, luckily not often, I must suffer with a liquid diet. Mine isn't much fun though and it's difficult to make so, because it MUST be clear.

I am however, permitted baked, roasted fish..... light filets, with a bit of lemon.

Any ideas how to make clear liquid seem like FOOD?

Btw, even though not totally clear, I can do:

Broths
Jello
Tea
Ginger Ale

And probably a few other things, but I hate it so much that I have been so spiteful not to learn enough about it that my nose has now been bitten off.

Mine is not a clear liquid diet, and I am not sure if that is a good thing or not, my diet can get pretty old. Mine is a powder that consists of carbos and proteins and maybe some fat, the proteins come from soy, it has cocoa in it for a "chocolate" flavor and I mix it with water or lactose free non-fat milk. I usually put ice cubes in it, and extra sugar free cocoa powder, then blend it in to an ersatz milk shake. But that gets old too.

I am permitted skinless chicken or fish and a little salad for one meal, if I really have to eat. It is supposed to be miniscule portions though. When the doctor is being drastic, he tells me liquid only.

I have relieved the boredom with a vegetable soup made from Mrs. Grass' dried mix, that I pop up with some hot sauce.

No juices whatsoever are permitted, just water, coffee, and diet soda.

I am supposed to do the liquid diet drink four times a day, and not eat anything. It has been terribly difficult staying true to this lately, but I am starting to see some ugly symptoms as a result of not staying with it, so I am "behaving" better, and should be back on to it pretty much full time soon. (The upcoming L.A. Roving Chow Fest notwithstanding.)

Email me if you wan't to commiserate further. Somehow, I don't think this thread will be very appealing to 'hounds.

How about good wonton soup without the wontons. The
Chinese and Thai folks create some wonderful clear broths that hit the spot when I'm feeling puny.

Oh, dear, clear liquid is a tough one to enliven, isn't it?

Unless of course it's vodka... ;)

Here's a thought. Are you allowed to eat shellfish? I'm thinking of that delicious (clearish) broth that is a byproduct of steamed clams. It might have enough heft to make you feel like you're eating something real.

You might also look into something in the aspic family.

Condolences, and good luck with your see-through food regimen. Here's to heartier times ahead!

If I were on a clear liquid diet, I'd cook my way through the Culinary Institute of America's "The New Professional Chef"'s broth and consomme section. They've got recipes for everything from smoked turkey consomme, and wild mushroom consomme, to Asian shrimp broth. Lots of variety and the recipes make large amounts. Make batches and freeze so that you have a whole menu of wholesome clear soups at any time.

Two ideas, I know...hummdrumm

1. Get a chinese black chicken and make the broth with all the pieces, adding only a parnsip.

2. Deborah Madison has a great recipe for a garlic broth...

basically 2 large heads of garlic...you don't have to peel them... in water, with the fresh spices you enjoy...including but not limited to sage, thyme, bay, parsley, cloves, saffron, and salt. boil it for 30 mins and strain!

I did not think I'd wake to find so many replies and ideas. Thank you so much.

I'll look them over more carefully and reply after I eat my way through and recover from the 9th ave food festival. I'm not on the diet at this time....... and the vodka did sound good. Very good. I'll ask the doc. :)

When a person has a cold, ginger tea is "a good thing" -- to coin a phrase. Just slice some fresh ginger into a a cup or two of water and simmer for a while.

So, extending this idea, ginger would pep up your chicken broth. Maybe add a star anise too, while you're in this Chinese mood.

Hi everyone...

I must say, after reading over (& I took notes for when I'll need this), some of this sounds good enough to eat when I don't have to eat it on the diet. And that's what I'm looking for.

It was a great idea of Lindsay's to make batches and freeze. Often times when one is on a clear diet, the last thing you want to do is take out ingredients to cook, when you can only drink the liquid portion. So having pre-made meals is a wonderful idea.

All of your suggestions have 'flavor', something my limited thoughts, apart from annoyance with the diet, could not figure out how to do.

I thank you all again. And thank you Mr. Chino. If I need further assistance, I shall ring. Maybe there is something here that can add to yours too, even though yours is not clear. -- I get to drink a nutritional supplement...... yukkkkkk.. drink when on this. It's not often that I'm on it though....
