its all semantics. a mushroom is a fungus, and so is mold.

anyway, anyone had Quorn before, and can attest to its taste and texture? I know its not a portabella mushroom.

(i would repost the article here, but some of you might not like that, so click link).

I've had it and I love it! The chicken tenders taste just like chicken that is a little dry, but I assume any diced frozen chicken would be dry. The ground beef version tastes more like ground turkey or ground veal. Both are much more real than any other fake meat stuff I've tried. It doesn't taste or have the texture of a mushroom/fungus at all. The texture is similar to other vegetable protein fake meats like SmartGround or GimmeLean, but with more of a real meat texture than those (like the chicken has a grain to it like real chicken). The chicken burgers and chicken nuggets are really breaded and fried, so of course they are delicious but higher in fat than the regular ones. I haven't tried the prepared meals but they are very high in fat and calories.

I don't think anyone is arguing that a mushroom is not a fungus. It is that quorn (is that a proper noun?) is a fungus, NOT a mushroom. It's the syllogism thing. A mushroom and quorn are fungi, but a fungus is not necessarily a mushroom or quorn. The problem is, for the FDA and some consumers, that the packaging represents the product as a mushroom derivative, rather than as a fungus.

First had it in London in Jan. while visiting my vegetararian sister-in-law and her husband.
Being a Brit, B-I-L felt he hadn't had breakfast unless it included "saussies", so every morning out came the package of Quorn Bangers. They were bland and rather smooth, and not unlike "real" bangers, which I don't love anyway. Not disgusting, though.
Then I tried some sort of Quorn chicken-style nugget things here in the States--the texture was a bit too yielding, but the flavor dead-on. Same with some Morningstar (TVP, not Quorn) chicken-style product that a houseguest left. Of course, I realized that I don't much like chicken patties or nuggets, but it's interesting to know what one can do with non-meat products! And I did read that Quorn has lots of fiber.
