This is my first time here. I have a question about Pheasants. If they are killed by carbon monoxide are they still safe to eat? My husbands friend killed some by the use of his tail pipe, I'm not sure if I should cook them or not.

CO is poisonous when inhaled, not swallowed. I'd probably brine them to get rid of any latent exhaust smell or taste. The next time your husband has to dispatch a bird, tell him to hold the bird firmly in one hand and then place the index and middle finger of the other hand on either side of the bird's neck. Quickly pull to seperate the bird's head from its' body. It's quick, easy, humane and doesn't smell like hi-test.

Reminds me - when I was growing up, the people in the house behind us would kill chickens in their basement (they made their own wines, too - but that's another story). They had drains in the basement floor, and with the steaming kettles to remove the feathers... All of us kids would be peering through their basement windows, horrified, unable to stop looking while those chickens would run around without their heads!!!!! And I did NOT live in the country!!

I live on the Tug Hill Plateau, in northern NY. It was either dispatch the birds that were in a pen, Let them loose to starve in the winter, or let the weather up here kill them. A taxidermist wanted to mount them so they had to be dispatched in a way that no harm came to the feathers or skin. And yes I plan on eating them. I like wild game very much, it's good for the cholesterol.

So that would be a no. Got it. I suppose I am not the first to note that humor and dead pheasants don't always mix. Good luck with the dish in any event.

Okay, it may be your first time here, but I think that anyone willing to even contemplate eating fowl killed in such a foul manner deserves some kind of Chowhound award! Let us know how it turns out.
