Chowhound search is not working. I know there was a recent thread about Prime Beef. I want to send some steaks to my parents for the holidays. In the past I have sent them Omaha Steaks but the last time I ordered them for my family, they tasted mushy! I have Allen Brothers catalog in front of me. Any advice. I need it ASAP!!! Thanks everyone.

  1. Here's what I found, Nancy. I don't know if it's what you recall though.

    1. Go with Lobel in NYC (on MAdison Avenue). Not cheap but the best damn retail beef available anywhere (porterhouse is to die for). They are also real butchers--and this is an art--rather than guys with knives and saws. If you wnt other cuts, get a bone-in steak of any kind (strip steak, old shell steak)

can't beat it anywhere in the world

Joe Niman's beef is the standard of quality on the West Coast. Restaurants jockey to get their hands on the variety cuts and offal. I grilled Niman rib eye's to enjoy with a bottle of Opus One for my fathers birthday. The beef outshined the wine.
