Reading the Sara Moulton thread below inspired me to post. I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but what does everyone think of Jacques Pepin's daughter Claudine, in his show Jacques Pepin Celebrates? I really like Jacques Pepin, but personally, I don't feel his daughter adds too much to the show, besides inexperience. It might be more interesting to have random viewers as guests, because the father-daughter dynamic is awkward at times. Once, Jacques corrected Claudine's mistake of placing pastries on the baking sheet too close to one another, and she became really huffy. It just made her seem like a bratty daughter. Does she have a day job?

Doesn't add much is an understatement. I'd rather discuss Napkins or the qualities of copy paper than watch her, hell talk to her, if I met her. Rather see two homeless people fight through a garbage can to eat discarded Chinese than watch her.

Her Father is great and gives off a warmth that is genuine. He's one of the better chef personalities on TV for my money. She must take after the mother. Their concept of the Father/Daughter is good but doesn't work with her.

I believe the whole idea behind the show is to have a cooking novice work with Jacques and make a few mistakes as part of the learning process.

They are probably trying to reduce the intimidation that some cooking shows bring about in beginners.

I think you're right and they thought using his daughter would be a fun twist and defuse his "Frenchiness", but I have found all the series they do together have a weird vibe to them. I don't like any of the series, even though I think Jacques Pepin is great.

I, too, have doubts about the chemistry on this series.

As to her day job, I think she has a relatively prestigious sales position with a winery or importer.

Yes, that's what she does. Pepin reveals in his book, "The Apprentice" that during festive evenings at the table, he'll sometimes pour wine from a different bottle into his not-quite-empty glass -- even pouring a white while he's still got a bit of red -- just to watch her cringe.

Yeah, I've always wondered about the daughter. Showing what a dirty mind I have, my first instinct was to think that she was blackmailing him because I had no idea why this woman shared the show with Pepin. True, she doesn't add anything to it at all. Everything seems forced, and it seems like she doesn't know her way around the kitchen. I find it very painful to watch both of them.

This is not Claudine's first rodeo with her father. She cooked with him as a child and looked absolutely hopeless, because though she enjoyed being with her father and cooking with him, she was not interested in cooking. She did not share his occupation, nor his passion for cooking. She also had a forgettable personality and this is why she does not have her own show. She is not interested in television. I find this refreshing. She does not give a dang about having her own program and being a star. She is satisfied with just being Claudine.

Just curious (per my post below) as to how an eight year-old topic was resurrected here?? Did you do a search for Claudine Pepin and came up with this oldie, or did the topic show up on a page margin somewhere on Chow? This has been the subject of some conversation on the Site Talk board - there have been requests to get the software to lock topics for new posting after a certain length of time so that people can read them but not post. As Alkapal said below, new posters sometimes don't notice there's a date on each post and some people just want to say what they want to say....... when they want to say it. It would be interesting to know more about that choice, if you don't mind.

On the shows that Claudine was on, I always wondered, as the daughter of a chef, why she didn't have more basic skills, like how to hold a knife. Maybe as a young adult she decided she didn't like cooking, wasn't going to compete with Famous Father, just wanted to go in a different direction, but a 4- or 5-year-old just wants to make cookies with dad, so surely they had some together time in the kitchen where she would pick up some technique.

On the other hand, I think Jacques seems a bit more amiable one-on-one with the camera. When Claudine is there, he seems to be curt with her often. He will credit his wife occasionally with things like "my wife loves to make this for Sunday lunch," so I don't think she leaves the cooking entirely to her husband.

But I agree, I'm not happy when Claudine is on the show.

Is this some kind of record....... resurrecting a topic after almost EIGHT years?????? Does this happen because someone did a search and came up with this oldie, or did the topic show up on a page margin somewhere?

I did a quick Google and Claudine has gotten married, moved to Oregon and then to Denver since this topic started. She is part-owner of a cooking school and her husband is an up-scale chef.
