Japanese food words?

Does anyone remember seeing a small article (in the NY Times?) earlier this year that explained how quickly new Japanese words are coined? One mentioned was "tonkatsu", ton=chinese for pork, katsu=japanese pronunciation of English cutlet, put together. There was a rationale that read like a road map to easier translation.

I'd really like to get pointed toward that article, if anyone can recall.
