In my opinion, there are only two good pepper mills on the market: peugot pepper mills and french crank pepper mills with the little handles (moulin a poivre)

I agree with you about the Peugot, but I also have found that Thompson pepper mills are very serviceable. If you use the mill as much as I, I would suggest a large size (to hold as many peppercorns as possible) and one that is easily cleaned as I find I grab for one...dirty hand and all.

I remember reading Stanley Marcus' book in the '70's where he wrote about the best of everything. He said that the Peugeot was the best peppermill.

I've had one for years and I am completely underwhelmed. It is very difficult to get a uniformly coarse grind. It does, however, do a nice job with fine grind.

I agree. If you decide on something else, look at the grinding mechanism to make sure it's not made of plastic, which will wear out quickly.

There was a comparison between many pepper mills in the July/August Cooks Illustrated. They recomended the Unicorn ($45.00); the East Hampton Industries peppermate peppermill ($40.00); the Oxo Good Grips Grind it Pepper Mill ($19.99) and the Zyliss large pepper mill ($27.50).

About a year ago, I bought a Unicorn Magnum through cutlery.com. I have been more than satisfied. It is large(holds over a cup of peppercorns)and easy to fill, can be set (and holds the setting stably) for a wide range of grinds, and is made of plastic so that it can be easily cleaned. It cost around $50, and has been worth it.

I would recommend without hesitation a Trudeau Evolution stainless steel pepper mill. As someone who has gone through far too many mills, with varying levels of disatisfaction (including several Peugot mills, which was disheartening), I found the Trudeau a year ago and have been in pepper bliss ever since!

The problem with the Peugot mills is that they're variable, for some reason. Some of them have a much better range of coarseness than others. Of course, you can't tell how it'll work until you get it home.

In our search for a new pepper mill we got the Oxo for its price and ease of use/refill. I personally liked the rabbit ear ones (one hand operation is a plus when cooking)a lot, before one of the ears broke off.

I use my favorite birthday present ever: a wooden coffee mill with a hand-grinder. It provides coarser pepper (cracked pepper) than I've ever obtained from a pepper grinder. If I need a finer grind, well, that's what paper towels and blunt objects are for.
