A mention of PMS cravings in another thread made me wonder: am I the only one who craves greens? I like spinach, kale, chard &c. all the time, but at "that time of the month" I *always* find myself reaching for them. I figure it's the iron in them.

What special foods do you seek out then? Or on any other cycle (barring the obvious seasonal thing)? Ladies? Gentlemen? Anyone?

I am pushed and pulled by cravings, too--but I've never been able to link it to specific cycles of any kind. It's always salt I crave--(Bacon is one of my sinful solutions.) And, along with salt, I often search out very sour tastes--lemons squeezed onto just about everything. Oddly enough, the only time I ever crave something sweet, is if I wake up in the middle of the night, and a half a cookie will take care of that. But when I awaken in the morning, I am not only back to salty--but the thought of sweet can make me feel a bit sick. This has GOT to be chemical, hormonal, etc.

I get the spinach thing too.
I also get a major jones for anything in the Oscar Mayer catagory - hot dogs, sausages of any kind, bologna... Does the female body maybe need nitrates at this time?!

LOL! Looked it up -- those cold cut items don't have all that much iron. Maybe we're losing protein as well?

(g) I don't know, but my roommate had wicked hot dog cravings while she was pregnant. We live walking distance from a Wienerschnitzel, and she was making daily trips (she recently fessed up that the ones that made it home were only the tip of the iceberg).

Personally, I crave red meat (rare or even raw) "that time of the month"; I've always assumed it was the iron.
