I'm looking for a slicer that will produce a strand-like vegetable cut similar to that of the carrot garnish served with sushi, or similar to the narrow julienne cut used in Chinese stir-fry. I've seen a hokey-looking one advertised recently on tv. It seems to leave a good part of the vegetable unsliced as it reaches the center... wasteful. Does anyone know where I might find a good quality product? I live in Brooklyn, so a N.Y.C. source would be helpful. Thanks!

The below link is the website formerly known as Lechters. The Apple Slicer/Peeler/Corer might do the trick (and there's a bunch of Lechters's in town).
What do you think?

A couple of years ago I bought a spiral slicer made by a company called Benriner at Katagiri, 224 E 59th St. I haven't been able to find it on their website, or by searching Benriner--only see a mandoline, which is the same, but different. This is a funky plastic spiral slicer which I do believe is the exact article that you are looking for. It was (believe it or not) about $50, but I love the little sucker. Hope that you can track it down.

I haven't looked for what you're looking for, and I don't know specifically who sells it, but if you have some spare time, I recommend that you walk down Bowery from Houston to Delancey and see whether any of the restaurant-supply stores sell it. You also might check Pearl River, Canal and Broadway; housewares are on the 3rd floor.

I did a search on Google (just typed in "spiral slicer") and found lots of places on the web selling Joyce Chen's spiral slicer for about $30. There are also some more expensive ones available -- lots more expensive -- in the $300-$400 range! The Joyce Chen slicer also goes under the name Saladacco.

Here's at least one place that's selling it:
