In lieu of the recent discussion on the prices of cherries I thought I would post the results of a quick survey of spice prices I did a couple of months ago. The list is semi-long so I'm posting a link to a table below.

I compared the prices of nutmeg, cumin, pure vanilla extract, cardamom, ground cinnamon, and chili powder at two grocery stores here in Rockland County as well as at Fairway and Kalustyan's in Manhattan and Sahadi's in Brooklyn. Brands included were McCormick, Durkee, and Badia, as well as house labels.

Mass produced McCormick spices tended to be the most expensive. Bulk items at Sahadi usually were the least expensive. In some cases the price of a spice varied by 600%!

I find that bulk is MUCH less expensive and usually of better quality. I split it up, vacuum pack it and freeze the packages. They're ready to use when I need them.

Thanks for the info, good listing, BUT are you referring to "ground" or "whole" on some of them? Peter
