Hi there. I am a WWII reenactor, and would like to have authentic WWII candy, or at least the wrappers, for our displays for the public. In particular, I am interested in:

Hershey Bars
Mars Bars
Milky Way Bars
Wrigleys Chewing Gum
Baby Ruth

Any pictures, descriptions, actual wrappers, anything would be helpful. Thanks for your time.

Your best bet would be to contact the manufacturers directly but I have a feeling even they might have trouble finding examples in the archives.

The reason being Sugar was so rationed during WWII that there were very little commercial candy bars made... And it was even more of a rarity in England and France where the GI's were.

Apparently the chocolate bars you are referring to are the 3 4oz 600 calorie ones supplied in a standard "D-ration" for emergency use which were manufactured by hershey's. The 600,000 rations purchased in 1941 by the army from hershey were followed by 117,800,000 rations in 1942. By then, the volume on hand was so great that the rations were stockpiled overseas and none procured in 1943. A final procurement of 52 million rations was made in 1944. Misuse of the D ration as a combat food led to its unpopularity and replacement before the end of the war by the C and K rations. In 1945, it was classified as "limited-standard" and recommendations followed that the governing specification be cancelled.

Here's a picture of it.

With the exception of the D ration stockpile the stuff was actually pretty rare in europe during the time, even though there are a lot of stories about GI's handing out D ration chocolate bars to German war victims. Canadian Red cross care packages also included chocolate bars.

But.. if more pics of commercial candy bars you want..

The candy bar my mother remembers most fondly from the 40s is the Sky Bar, which is still being made by Necco. She and her sister used to make a ritual of eating the various compartments (fudge, marshmallow, peanut butter, I forget) in a certain order.

The link below leads to the page of a Canadian man who has a collection of candy bar wrappers; although these are current, not vintage, the page contains links to other candy bar sites.

Mmmmm, Skybar! I remember them fondly too. My ritual was always to save my favorite segment for last. It wasn't much of a sacrifice, since they were all good. But I haven't seen them in quite a while. pat

You can order Sky Bars from a website - hometownfavorites.com. They also have a "French Taffy" that I've posted about - it's a dead ringer for Bonomo's Turkish Taffy.

Interesting, if you type "Sky Bar" into Google, most of the links you retrieve are for night spots named "Sky Bar". There's only one original Sky Bar (sounds like a slogan to me).
