smoked salmon shelf life??

  • s

bought a huge package of smoked salmon two weeks ago at Costco to have with bagels. Sealed it up in new packaging and it’s still in the fridge. How long does store-bought smoked salmon last, anyway? thanks.

  1. I don't know the answer, but I'd be surprised if there isn't a use-by date on the package. Once opened, I'm not sure I'd eat it after a week.

However....smoked salmon freezes excellently. Take what you aren't going to eat this week, wrap it in individual portions (i.e. so you only have to defrost what you need for a week's time) in saran wrap, put the wrapped fish in a ziplock freezer bag and squeeze out as much air as you can (pardon me if you already know how to freeze meat!). Defrost in the fridge overnight when you are ready to eat.

I promise, you will barely notice the difference.

I buy the Costco package & always freeze it that way in portions- never noticable.

thanks to all of you! in the past, i have done just that...freeze it in portions, that is. However, this time I was sure we would eat it the following weekend (which I've done with no problem)...but never did. I guess I've learned a lesson!

This talk about smoked salmon reminded me of my favorite place to buy smoked salmon. I've posted it in the General Topics board. See link below.

    2. From my experience, smoked salmon will stay fresh several days, perhaps a week, but not longer.
