Looking to add some ramikins to my cupboard now that I've discovered molten lava cakes and have a question. If it says on the bottom that it is microwave safe, can I assume that it is oven safe too? Also, does the ramikin shape matter to the success of the cakes? Does it have to have a round flat bottom like a mini cake pan or can it be beehive shaped with a smaller bottom surface and broader brim?

Where plastics are concerned I completely agree, but I'm inclined to think that anything glass or ceramic will be fine. If you're worried, you can stick one of them in the oven for a while with a little water in it. Unlike in the microwave, the worst thing that'll happen is it'll crack (so put it on some kind of baking sheet or pan) - it's not going to explode or create a mini aurora borealis as the microwave starts belching smoke. :)

i believe oven and microwave resistance have little to do with each other. that said, i also think ramekins are generally made for baking, and i assume they said 'microwave safe' because the porcelain they used has little or no metal content, making it safe for both purposes.

the ramekin shape is supposed to help a souffle remain erect, but since most molten lava cakes are semi collapsed, perhaps it doesn't matter for you. bowl shaped things are conveniently stackable, but someday you may come to love a souffle...
