I need to buy a pepper grinder (and perhaps a matching salt mill!)

I'm tempted by the one-handed pepper ball, which seems very useful when cooking, but I also am impressed by the peugeot brand (boyf's an engineer). Does anyone have one of these? Any reviews would be appreciated. Alternatively, other affordable reccommendations are welcome. Thanks!

I have bought one of the higher end Peugeot pepper grinders for work from a restaurant supply house out here called Surfas and I really like it. It is a simple design and the best thing about it is you turn it clockwise for course grind and counter-clockwise for fine grinding. if I didn't have and OXO at home already and they weren't as expensive as they are I might get another one.

I bought one of these smaller Peugeot pepper grinders about 15 years ago. It still works perfectly and I use it every day. I would highly recommend this grinder as the internal design mechanism never changes.

I've been using a medium-sized Peugot black lacquer pepper mill for well over 15 years, and it grinds just as fine as the day I got it. Plus it's lovely to look at :-)

The Magnum and Magnum Plus have gotton the best reviews everywhere. I intend on getting the magnum from the Bakers Catlogue.

I believe they are one handed. They are Cooks Illustrateds #1.

I have the Unicorn "Peppergun", the precursor to the Magnum and Magnum plus, also by Unicorn. I love it, and have no complaints even after several years! I've given as gifts and everyone is happy. Also have given the Magnum Plus for serious high-quantity cooks. Both are very easy to use, adjustable, and put out a good quantity (Magnum plus quantity is awesome).

I don't see the point of a grinder for salt, IMHO.

Yes, definitely, the Magnum! I have a cabinet full of pepper mills and always reach for the Magnum. You get more pepper per turn and it's easy to vary the grind. The Magnum is 6 inches high and the Magnum Plus is 9 inches. Otherwise, they are basically the same. I have the 6 incher and it holds a huge amount of peppercorns. I use it nearly every day and it doesn't seem as though I fill it all that often. Magnum does make a one-handed mill, but I haven't tried that one. Needing two hands has never been an issue for me.

Ditto the Magnum, although I just bought mine this weekend so I can't give a long-term study. :)

I tried the one-handed pepper ball (the one with two handles that you squeeze together) in the same store. It felt too lightweight and flimsy for me.

Do NOT get the pepper ball. The amount of pepper it outputs on one squeeze is miniscule, so to get a tsp. of ground pepper, you'll be squishing those handles together an awful lot - gave me hand cramps. :-)

I'll chime in with another vote on the Magnum. I had a pepper ball recently and agree the amount it outputs isn't worth the trouble. Also the construction is flimsy.

I received the Magnum as a xmas present and its been great so far. Very easy to refill, output is tremendous per grind.

I have a PERFEX mill that I bought about 30 years ago, and have used daily. I recently got another because the spring has lost some tension and it wants to stay at 'coarse', so I use it at the stove and have another for the table. It even goes camping with us and has won converts everywhere it goes!

Made of cast aluminum in two sizes, it has a swing handle on top, and a side loading chute. Easy to load and use, it's very comfortable and can be used one handed for those with medium sized hands.

After several different types of grinders (but no modern high end ones) I'm very happy with my Perfex. At about $55.00, mine is economical at $2.00 a year!
