      <content>if it's really rusted, i'd toss it. if it's limescale buildup (do you live in england, perhaps?), i'd suggest pouring in a bottle or two of white vinegar and leaving it to sit overnight or for at least a few hours. that should clear it up. i also have a RH kettle, and though i use only filtered water in it, the lime does build up over time. it's maddening!

      <content>Will try the vinegar bit and let you know (live in LA) but I really think it looks like rust and judging from the color of the water being poured out, it is.  Maddening though, can't find a similar replacement on the web.  Old Faithful has finally died.</content>

      <content>I have a Phillips electric kettle w/stainless element in the bottom I picked up at a liquidation outlet.  Must have been a customer return, because the element was coated with scorched scale.  I put a little CLR and water in it and heated it and it cleaned up beautifully.</content>
