Im trying to locate a Christmas gift, but I cannot for the life of me find what Im looking for or determine what the name of the tool is. Frying strainer is about as close as I can get. Essentially a long handled implement youd use to scoop ravioli directly out of hot water or dumplings out of hot oil. Not a chinois. The scoop is flatish, circular. I see Lidia Bastianich using one all the time on her show. Would love to get one if only I knew what they were. Any ideas where to find one?

just think about whether you will want to put it through the dishwasher - some of the wire (aluminum, galvanized steel) and handle types may not hold up to repeated dishwashing.

Asian stores almost always have them. They come in a variety of sizes and are made of different materials, so think about what you want. There are ones entirely made of aluminum, ones that look more like they're woven out of metal wire, wooden handles, plastic handles, etc. If possible, bring your pot or wok so you can kind of get a feel of whether the spider is the right size and length for you. I simply asked for one once, and the one boyfriend brought home was way to big and long.

I am reasonably certain you are refrring to a skimmer. The thing some people call a spider (I don't--it skeeves me out) is a type of a skimmer.
