Our ages-old electric meat grinder was flooded a couple months ago, and Thanksgiving (and rice dressing!) is coming up. Old faithful was an old Proctor-Silex that treated us well for our 4-6 light to medium duty/high volume uses per year, but it seems Proctor-Silex has moved from the world of electric meat grinders. Any recommendations for an inexpensive model (with coarse to fine discs) for relatively infrequent use? We may go for a manual model for the interim, if we can't find an electric model.

Also, any experience with the KitchenAid grinder attachment? Friends' experiences with the pasta attachment haven't been good. How does the KA hold up for fine and coarse grinding? Cleaning? Operation?

I think that spending a bit more for a product that will never fail you even w/ the sporadic use might be the best idea. Check out the LEM products site for quality equipment that is the product that I and many fellow hunters use. Bass Pro & Cabelas also have a number of reasonable grinders. I bought mine off eBay.

The KitchenAid grinding attachment works well for me. Turns beef into ground beef, and chicken into ground chicken, without much hassel.

For the use you're talking about, you may want to pick one up and see how it works for you.

Perhaps one of the local businesses that will return it, if you're unhappy with the performance?

(Nothing like getting more functionality from your existing stand mixer, eh???)

Very happy with our KitchenAid grinding attachment. If anything, my husband complains he can't grind as large as he would like for his sausages - but he just needs to buy a larger plate. It stands up to a lot of meat, is sturdy and easy to clean.

This recommendation will probably be the least likely one for which you will opt. I mention it only because of my experience with the device.

My late mother gave me a manual meat grinder manufactured by Vitantonio years ago. I have recently started to use it grind pork to make chorizo. It works great. I don't use it very often, but have been very pleased with the results. It has 2 extrusion discs, coarse and fine.

The following URL is for the company that now distributes such grinders plus a line of modern kitchen appliances.

Thanks for all the recommendations -- we may just end up going manual for the interim, but I'm keeping my eyes peeled for an electric grinder.
