Thank you all for your suggestions! We ended up making the graveyard cake, inspired by the Martha Stewart tombstone cupcakes. We used a chocolate cake recipe from Christopher Kimball and also his ganache recipe, though my friend remembers the cookbook names and I don't...sorry! We used Martha's chocolate shortbread for the gravestones, found on her site, as well as her royal icing. The cake was sooo moist and delicious!

And...best of all, we won! Even better, the prize was a cookbook--Kimball's Dessert Bible. Totally perfect, since that's where the recipe mostly came from!

Thanks to all of your for your suggestions!

I'm trying to figure out how to post a link to the photo...such a thing goes beyond my tech-know how!

Thanks, Andrew, for the photo hosting link. I hope this works!

The recipe for the cake was Chocolate Sheet Cake from Baking Illustrated. I used Hershey's Dutch Process cocoa and the leftover mini-chocolate chips from the ghost project. For the ganache, again I used semisweet chocolate chips (store brand, I think). Both were very good - and with good chocolate, it would probably be even better.

The cake wasn't too sweet, either. I can post the recipe from home tonight if people are interested.

Thanks so much for the photo! (Keep 'em coming.) Congrats on your win! The cake looks verrrry scarrrrry...love the ghosts. Not to be mean, but your cake makes that plain spider web decorated one behind it look so non-glorious and diminutive!
