I'm not sure if this is the proper spot for this post on the Chowhound boards, but here goes...My father is turning 80 & we are having a big party for him in a few months. I have been asked to give a "speech". Since I've done this for his last 3 significant birthdays, I've run out of serious stuff to talk about. Besides, I feel like when I do these "talks" now, I'm speaking at his funeral(!!!). I'd like to do something with a different, fun twist this time. He is a gentleman that has always (ahem) LOVED his alcohol & still does (especially scotch & vodka). I'd like to develop a theme for this "speech", which is talking about his favorite subject -alcohol/spirits. Can all you terrific chowhounders help me? I'd like to develop a list of the popular drinks/spirits/cocktails for every 10 years, starting with the 1930's (since he was born in 1926), 1940's, 1950's, 1960's, 1970's, 80's, 90's & 2000-2005. Can you all help me with the list? THANKS!!

Perusing through that timeline, I found this book mentioned:

Drinking in America: A History, Mark Edward Lender and James Kirby Martin [Free Pres:New York] 1982

Thanks, Linda, this is a great read!

GREAT link! Thank you so much.

      2. Though it doesn't deal exclusively with booze, Tom Standage's "A History of the World in Six Glasses" is great fun.
