hand mixer for whipping cream or egg whites

I can't be bothered to pull out my mixmaster for this and I'm too lazy to do it by hand. I don't suppose I can use a stick blender to do this kind of mixing?

What kinds of hand mixers have people liked?

  1. You can use a stick blender for whipped cream, but I don't know how well it would work to aerate egg whites.

    I have a kitchenaid hand mixer, just one of the small ones with three speeds that works very well for those small jobs.

      I have that Kitchen Aid hand mixer too. It does a great job.

        I just caught an episode of America's Test Kitchen this past weekend in which they tested out hand mixers. They used peanut butter cookie dough as their test medium. The KA mixer outperformed the others significantly and offered (in their determination) the "total package."

        KA has a DC instead of AC motor, which apparently makes it lighter, more quiet, and more energy efficient. The angled design also allowed people to hold their arms at a more comfortable position. As expected, it did carry the highest price tag at around $70 retail, though I'm sure there are good discounts out there.

            I was just thinking about your OP, and if you're primarily going to just use for whipping cream or egg whites, I'm sure a less expensive model will do. ATK also ranked the Braun (refer back to their website for specific model) fairly high, and it's cheaper than the KA model.

            The thing about ATK or these type of reports is that I sometimes get sucked into the idea of buying the best even though my purposes can be served w/ a dif. and cheaper model. Just something to keep in mind...

              I recently bought the 9 speed Kitchen Aid, and am very pleases with it. Amazon had a good deal on it. (I ordered with someone else and got $25 off Kitchen stuff etc..). It far surpasses my $15 Proctor Silex, although that serves its purpose too. G'luck!

            I like my kitchenaid hand mixer for whipping cream - though for the egg whites and most other projects I usually use my stand mixer instead - cant see making PB cookies with a hand mixer though - its just too much vibration to be pleasant, tho I guess it would be a valid test of strength and sturdiness.

            It seems to me writing this that I am a bit overequipped - and would probably be perfectly happy, for whipping cream, with a manual egg mixer like I used to have. I always liked that appliance and I think you can still pick them up (a bewildering range of historic models too) on ebay and other places. If you dont have 70 bucks to drop, you might want to consider it.

              Do you mean a rotary egg beater? I thought one needed to hunt those down at garage sales, etc. nowadays, but then I walked by some at Bed Bath & Beyond the other day, so I guess not. You can probably also find them new in insependent hardware stores that carry housewares, which seem to be a good source for "old-fashioned" gadgets.

                Yeah, they still are made though I prefer the idea of picking up a perfectly good vintage ECKO (for maybe $3) on ebay to buying one, probably foreign made, with plastic gears, new).

                These are much more effective than a whisk in making whipped cream, perfectly acceptable. What prompted this whole line of thought was the realization that I have a very nice but quite expensive KA hand mixer that I really use only for one task, and that rarely.
                For people without much kitchen space or money, rotary egg beater is a perfectly acceptable solution.
                For more major mixing tasks, a stand mixer is a much better and more versatile solution than the hand model.

                  Except for the $200 price difference, and the space it takes up (which those, like me, without much kitchen don't have much of.

                  I've made many batters and doughs just fine with a hand-held beater (and even with a wooden spoon) that a rotary egg beater couldn't handle. I look forward to the day when I can have a stand mixer.

                    I believe America's Test Kitchen determined that the KitchenAid hand-held mixer that won out could pretty much handle any sort of dough or batter except for bread dough. My KA stand mixer is nice, but like any piece of equipment that eliminates use of my own hands, it makes me slightly more removed from the cooking/baking process so that I can't "feel" where things are at. Sometimes I love to whip egg whites w/ a hand whisk instead...

      2. I have a 1970's retro GE handmixer that I bought unopened in the original box at a yard sale a few years back for all of $5.00. The lady running the sale said she received 2 when she got married and was still using the original. It's still running strong for me!

        1. I find i get better results by using a plain old whisk and some elbow grease. I can get both a lot fluffier than using an imersion sstick blender.

          Besides if you are eating whipped cream it might help to burn off a few calories beforehand ;)

            If anyone's looking for an inexpensive alternative, the Black & Decker hand mixer I have is very powerful and has never failed me even with stiffer doughs.


            1. My immersion blender has a whisk attachment that does a great job on whipped cream. It just rotates the whisk so I have to sort of stir around the bowl to get all the cream going. But it's way less work that doing it all by hand and it's much quicker than my standard two-prong hand mixer. I've never tried it with egg whites.
