I always see their meats in the deli? Anyone had them? Is it worth it?

I think every single deli in NYC carries Boar's Head. They are pretty good I guess...I've never really thought about it...

      1. All the Publix supermarkets down here in Florida sell Boar's Head meats..they are excellent quality meats, very expensive but I would say worth the price.
BY the way, I would recommend their Sweet Pickle Slices with Horseradish, absolutely a blast to eat. Someone brought them in to work the other week and though I prefer dill pickles, these were awesome. Went out and bought a jar; once the pickle slices are gone, you can cut up a cucumber and put the pieces into the brine and in a few days, you have a new jar of them.

Also in Florida, also a fan of Boar's Head. The meats are very good quality, also like the mustards and the horseradish sauce.

Wish you had kept quiet about the Sweet Pickle Slices. Mentioned it to my wife, as she was going by Publix yesterday. She got a jar. Those things are addictive.

              Hey Val,
Thanks on the heads up about BH sweet horseradish pickles also the money saving idea of slicing the cukes. Publix finally came to SC about 5 years ago. Love the supermarket. Also the BH horseradish cheddar is to die for. We have a Piggly Wiggly that once in awhile they put the BH Hors. Ch. for either $3.99 or $4.99 a lb. I buy several lbs when they do and then vac seal it.

where in New york, Long Island specificially can one
purchase Boar's Head pickles with horseradish?

              2. They are one of the national sources of Lebanon bologna these days.

I am not impressed by things like their roast beef or poultry, nor their corned beef or pastrami; they are better for things like salamis, bolognas, hams and the like. Their natural casing hot dogs are pretty good.

I second their hot dogs... nice and juicy and a real snap! I also love their Horseradish Cheddar. It has a REAL bite that works so well in a Grilled Cheese Sandwich...

As for the cold cuts... I really didn't taste much difference between them (Ham, Turkey, Roast Beef) and the much cheaper deli meats they sell at TJs...

                2. To me, Boar's Head is generic and salty.

I remember when delis used to roast their own meats and used to sell "special" sausages. Special sausages were local and imported sausages that were chosen for their taste.

I remember when families ran delis, and delis were stand alone businesses, not part of a chain supermarket. I have been fortunate to experience two such delis: Woodside Deli in Redwood City and Heidi's European Deli in San Jose.

But, Boar's Head is what is available. I was surprised to learn, BH is available nationally.

                  1. Boar's Head Oven Roasted Turkey and Smoked Provolone are the only deli items my finicky husband will eat. I also like their black forest ham. I'd never buy their corned beef or pastrami- I go to special deli for that.

                    1. I think it depends on where you live. In Northern VA, we do not have access to great delis like the ones in NYC. Therefore, to me, Boar's Head's products are the best from what is available (the turkey tastes like real turkey---not spongy like some of the other brands) and worth any price difference.

You can always ask for a sample at the deli and do an on the spot taste test before you buy.

                      1. I hadn't thought about it much, but I must be missing something by buying Plantation deli meat. Is Boar's Head really worth the high price???

                        1. i like ordering boars head meat at the delicatessen...i almost feel like it is a luxury item or sign of sophistication. is that weird?

Well they do cost more, but that's because they have to cover their advertising costs and the price of all the equipment they "give" the deli. Almost all of their meats are made by someone else (say Butterball or whatever) although to their specs. I prefer other brands on most items, even the house brand, sometimes for the price but also for the taste. Can't stand their liverwurst!! PS The delis that have Boars Head signage have to have Boars Head in the case, but most of them have some other brand in the back, hidden away, for breakfast sandwiches, or still make their own roast beef and turkey, etc. Can't let the Boars Head rep see or he'll go ballistic.

                          2. Boars Head is good quality..although lunch meat not good as a steady diet. My family prefers the Boars Head Old Fashion Ham...this is as perfect as ham can be..makes a wonderful sandwich. I also find the American cheese not as salty as other brands. The natural casing hot dogs excellent. Enjoy.
