I've eaten a lot of Thai in SF over the past 8 years, but overall, my favorite is Little Thai on Polk and Broadway. Yesterday I got takeout-#38 Hot Beef with Bamboo Shoots, and #28 Seafood Curry. Both were just outstanding. The flavors in each dish the place serves are exceptionally complex.

Khan Toke (Geary) is of course #1 for atmosphere, and Marnee Thai (Irving) is very good too, especially the Chan Pad Poo. And Osha Thai (Geary downtown) is great for quick noodles.

Ok, anyone else?

Also in the Mission, Osha Thai opened a branch on Valencia near 19th. I've had their Tom Yum, Tom Ka, and Duck Noodle soups -- all excellent.

Thanks for mentioning the new branch of Osha. At dinner last night, one of my friends said he'd been there last week and also liked it very much.

Like the original poster, my most frequent Thai meals are from Little Thai. I've had good luck with the specials posted on the walls.

Wow, great little Thai review- yours, not Michael Bauers. I was surpised he had such bad experiences there recently. I find the food to be as good as it was years ago at their original location.

And thanks for the recs all! Will try them and post my results here.

I felt like I had to see if my neighborhood place had truly sunk so far. Don't know what happened to Bauer, as he seemed like he really wanted to give them positive marks and wasn't on a vendetta. But I think they took his comments to heart, as they were closed for some remodeling. How has Little Thai changed?

I was there right before and right after the "renovation" -- and there wasn't much change. I think that there was a new paint job, and some of the clutter was gone but that's about it. It was a while ago, and it definitely wasn't enough of a change to make a huge impression.

I really like that restaurant but I have a pet peeve about sitting near the back wall there -- it's small enough that I get obsessed with being able to tell who washed their hands and who didn't! (not to be too graphic but you can kind of hear who leaves right after flushing and who runs the water ...)

Hasn't stopped me from going to get those delicious clams.

Thai House Express

Some great and less common dishes such as braised pork leg with mustard greens, sum tum with small dried crabs instead of dried shrimp is excellent, fish ball curry served with rice noodles, frid rice with fermented sausage, pad see ew, etc. If you ask for spicy, it will be very HOT.

Thai Cafe has wonderful combination seafood noodle soups (octopus, squid, fish balls, rice noodles) in broths not too salty but flavorful just the same. Make sure to try their roast duck over spinach, tod mun fish cake appetizer, clay pot catfish, curry chicken and string beans, etc.

Been going here for over 10 years, and it has been consistently fresh and tasty.

Can anyone recommend somewhere in the city (or east bay) to get gang som? I've been going to Sabuy Sabuy in Rockridge for it, but I'm looking for other versions, for comparison.

Gang som is a sour, orange soup (or basically a thin, boiled curry, without coconut milk) flavored with tamarind and shrimp paste. I think that most versions have fish or seafood.

My single attempt at homemade was a dismal failure, so I'm hoping to get a recommendation or two for more well-prepared examples.
