Tips for freezing butternut squash?

I am looking at a huge butternut squash that I have halved but not peeled. I only need half of it for dinner tonight. Can I just freeze the other half (well wrapped of course) without peeling or cooking it? Will the texture suffer if I do this?

Or do I have to cook and peel the other half now?

  1. We peel and cut all of it, cook all or just what we need at the time and then freeze the balance in a 'Zip-lok' bag. The same pre-cooked product (frozen) is available in our area food stores. Never had a problem with it. (Good when blended with potato also.)
