ISO the ultimate red velvet cake recipe
Hi hounds. I'm looking for the BEST Red Velvet Cake recipe you can muster up. I would like to make cupcakes and/or cakesicles. Thanks in advance!
Here's a recipe from my "African - American Heritage Cookbook" that I have never tried but every recipe I have tried from this book has been outstanding.
Red Velvet Cake
1/2 cup butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 tsp red food coloring
2 Tbsp cocoa
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 Tbsp vinegar
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups sifted cake flour
1 tsp salt
Oven 350 degrees. Grease and flour 2 9" layer pans. Cream butter and sugar together. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour into pans and bake 30 to 35 minutes or until cake springs back when touched lightly with you finger. Cool on wire racks for 5 minutes then remove from pans and let cakes cool completely.
6 Tbsp all purpose flour
1 cup water
1 cup butter
1 cup graulated sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
Mix four and water; bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until slightly clear. Cool 2 hours. Cream together butter, sugar and vanilla. Add the butter mixture to the flour mix. Beat until light and fluffy. Use to fill and frost cake.
Sounds good. Hope it works out well.
There is a recipe on Epicurious that my friend made for me for my birthday. I cannot access their website right now for some reason, but the recipe also had berries in the frosting, which while perhaps not authentic, was very good.
Linked below is another recipe from the food archives at gothamist.com. I haven't yet made it, but it sounds good (they also give low carb modifications if that is a consideration).
