Accidentally frozen yogurt

Pat Hammond Nov 10, 2004 10:01 AM

I absentmindedly put almost an entire quart of whole milk yogurt into the freezer. When I discovered what I'd done, I thought it'd be ruined. But I'm here to report that after thawing it was perfectly fine. I gave it a good stirring. I may freeze it on purpose, from time to time, if I'm going out of town and have some sitting in the fridge.

Yep, found out the same thing myself recently. Yuo can also freeze & defrost milk with no degradation in quality. So now when I see my favorite milk or yogurt on sale, I stock up and pop them in the chest freezer downstairs.

Does milk expand, like water, when frozen? I guess what I'm really asking is whether the container should be opened and a little bit poured out before freezing.

Well the milk I get is in coated cardboard, so maybe it's got more give, and also I believe those aren't filled as much as plastic containers are, but I haven't had a problem yet

Yes, it expands. Just tried it with half and half. And, DO NOT use glass containers either, just in case.

My parents used to freeze milk when they first got a freezer and had 4 children who were all milk drinkers. It made it seperate a bit. It was kind of funny looking.

I read about freezing milk here quite a while ago and have been doing it too. I was always ending up with way more sour milk than I could use. I find it works out fine.
