frozen gefilte fish

I don't want to serve bottled gefilte fish at the sedar so does anyone have a recommendation for a frozen gefilte fish?
I'd love to make it from scratch, but I am afraid of the cost

    1. My mother, a"h, was not an especially good cook, but she made the absolute best gefilte fish. As she got older she stopped making it because it was too much work for her. We tried getting the recipe from her, but she had never written one down, and even her verbal instructions included steps like "Add a little sugar -- not as much as Aunt Hilda does." Nothing I've ever tasted compares.

Thanks for the opportunity to reminisce. As for the answer to your question, A&B is the best frozen fish loaf, not just IMHO, but also in my mother's. It's what she switched to when she had to.

          That was so sweet.

But Aunt Hilda's was sweeter :-)

            2. Gefilte fish is from the rare exceptions to the Rule.

As a rule, any finished product will cost more than if you take raw materials and prepare it yourself.

In the Metro NY area, frozen gefilte fish is most always cheaper than making it from scratch.

I take it that your are not from the NYC area, as Kosher for Passover frozen Gefilte fish is widely available in any Kosher grocery store/supermarket in the area.

                1. I like the BenZ fish sweet recipe. This also makes a great low-fat high-protein dinner for two any night of the year. Thank you.

                    1. A&B has a wide variety of frozen gefilte fish options that are all very good. I've found it to be the best.

                        1. A&B is the best, they use fresh fish, fresh eggs etc. a lot of other companies use frozen fish, frozen eggs, fillers, and so on. you will pay a little more, but you will get a better product. PS. for a cheaper version, A&B also makes royal gefilta fish.

                            1. Another vote for A&B.

                                1. can anyone tell me what are the best fishes that make up the best gefilte fish in a jar? (i.e. whitefish, carp, mullet. pike or a combo of all?) thanks

                                    1. re: emily

My mother, a"h, who made the best gefilte fish around (not too sweet, either), used whitefish and pike only. She was very much anti-carp. Of course, she was very much anti-jarred gefilte fish too.

                                        1. re: emily

being jewish in the south, you would never use anything for gefilte fish except BUFFALO. down here it's known as a trash fish, but it's the best gefilte fish you've ever tasted.

                                            1. re: jerry klein

Buffalo is the name of a fish? Is there a real name?
