That's very sad. If I'm thinking of the correct company, the owner/founder of Gan Eden was a frequent poster on many Usenet Judaism groups. If I recall, his family is quite observant. I was always wondering how they'd do a Jewish education where they were located. Now I guess I know my answer... :-(...

Well, I held out as long as I could. When we began the winery in '85, we were already living in Sonoma County (I was winemaker of a nonkosher boutique winery) just getting into observant Judaism, just married, and without any kids. Now I have 6. The first 3, we managed to provide acceptable Torah education (chinuch). However, with the current state of observant Judaism in northern California (disintegrating before our very eyes, for the most part), people moving away, and particularly, the pool of available acceptable tutors dwindling, there seemed to be only one choice. If we move to southern California, which seems likely, I can always try to find investors to start a new winery. The vast majority of the money from the sale of this winery is going to the investors, of course, so I won't have enough to begin a new winery enterprise on my own. Of course, nothing says that I will be able to find investors, though.

If you move out to New York, there has been a large growth in Hamptons wineries over the last few years. Some have gotten rave reviews. I don't believe there is a kosher Hamptons winery yet.

Also, there are vineyards in the Hudson Valley.

You know, the area around Rancho Cucamonga used to be the center for the production of Moscato esp. Moscato d'Alessandria wines. I don't know if those are of interest to you and with land prices I also don't know - but Temecula is close to San diego and there are several traditional communities there as well.

While i wish you luck, I just hope that you'll treat kosher tourists with a bit more kindness and hachnasat orchim in your next venture. I called your winery 2 years ago while we were in the area hopeful for a visit. (and considering i work in the Jewish world, the PR could have been valuable) The person who answered on the phone was downright nasty when i asked if you did tours. Bad PR lasts a long time.

There is a market for kosher wines, im sorry it didn't work for you.
