Kosher Wine

We haven't really discussed KW in awhile. I recently was told that Medoc region wines from 99 and 00 were really good. I found two kosher Medoc wines--Chateau La Tonnelle and Chateau La France with wines from those vintages. Anyone ever have these? Any other Medocs?

  1. Yarden Wines, made by the Golan Heights Winery are all very good wines.

I find the kosher French wines to be poor at the lower price ranges, but haven't tried those.

One French kosher wine that I can recommend is Bunan Bandol from the South of France. Admittedly on the bretty/earthy side, if you like the sort of thing, and good typicity.

Here's a link to a post on the SF board from last Passover. Svl's wine recs have been solid.

    2. I've had several of the Roberto Cohen Bordeaux. Most recently I drank a bottle of Tour St. Laurent 2000 Haut-Medoc which was actually quite good. Unfortunately, I drank it on shabbos which means no tasting notes.

If you drink white wine, try the Roberto Cohen Pouilly Fuisse 2002. According to my tasting notes "very nice. Green apple - pear flavors"

Where can you buy this wine?

        1. re: hg

I buy most of my wine at Gotham Wines in Manhattan (94th and Broadway). They have an excellent selection of kosher wines.

          AndeB,

          My Cohen tasting notes.........

We bought a mixed case of Cohen reds at a tasting where he was the presenter. In general, we have been disappointed by them in real life. The quality we had expected seems overshadowed by our perception of their harshness. The Medoc may be a little higher price than what we bought - we did however buy 3 or 4 different wines and have had a common reaction to them.

        3. queen anne liquor on queen anne road and degraw avenue(teaneck, new jersey) has a very large selection of kosher and israeli wines-

          1. i have and there quite good. they are bordeaux. they are not mevushal and are quite good. cote du rhone is another one you might try. you seem to like deep reds. cote du rhone is made from tempranillo grapes and is a bit smoother than cabs and similar to merlots. the baron herzog white label california cabernet chalk hill is quite excellent and in the same price range that you are looking into and maybe a little more but worth it.

            1. re: robin

Cotes du Rhone are made principally from Grenache grapes, not Tempranillo. For Tempranillo wines, turn to Spain and try Rioja or Ribera del Duero, although I'm not familiar with kosher offerings.

There are kosher Riojas on the market from Ramon Cardova.

            2. 2000 was a great year for Bordeaux (which includes Medoc) 1999 only mediocre.

If you can find it (and want to pay that much) an excellent Spanish Kosher wine is the 2001 Capcanes Montsant Peraj Ha'Abib from the Catalunya region. It is a wine made for cellaring however. Probably runs around $40 per bottle.

Other French wineries that make a Kosher wine include Château Malmaison (Baronne Nadine de Rothschild Kosher), Château de Montage, Château Léoville Poyferré (Non-mevushal), and Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne Brut. But be careful to make sure you have the Kosher version as they also make regular wines predominately.

I agree with others that the low end Kosher wines from France are ordinary at best.
