Ham Salad?
I know it's a throwback to another era (Chock Full o' Nuts coffee shops, etc.), but does anyone know of anyplace in midtown Manhattan (Grand Central Station area) that actually still makes good, old-fashioned ham salad sandwiches? It's just something I've been craving lately: a lovely, slightly sweet combination of chopped ham, mayonnaise, a little mustard, and sweet pickle relish with lettuce on whole wheat. Mmmmm. I know I can make it myself and bring it to work, but I never seem to think of it when I'm at home in the evening - it's something that hits me right around 11:45 or so. Suppose I'll have to think ahead and brown bag it, but I'd love to know if it's around anywhere.

Are you from York County, Pennsylvania? I swear I've never seen that stuff outside of South Central PA, where we eat it as a dip on our Utz potato chips.... Sorry, can't help you in terms of Manhattan sources!

Nope, not York County - Allegheny County. And, yes, I guess it's a harkening back to my Western PA roots. I've given up on finding ham salad at a diner or restaurant around here, though. If I want it, I'll have to make my own.
Thanks, anyway.

If you are making your own Ham Salad, be sure to finely dice or finely chop the ham. Do not grind it -- this makes all the difference in a world for texture of the final product. The old Woolworth's Five and Dime stores did that at their lunch counters and it was a big hit for many years. After today, I'll have some left over ham - know what's for lunch tomorrow LOL.
