Does anyone know where in Manhattan I can buy real ginger ale, made with ginger root and not too much sweetener? This is one of my favorite remedies for an upset stomach (or just for having a drink)...but only when it's the good stuff.

Also, do you have a recommended brand?

Try Fentiman's. Very good indeed and makes an exellent hangover cure to boot.

Last time I was in NYC, I picked up some at Whole Foods. I think they also have it at Garden of Eden

In the midwest there is a brand of ginger ale called Vernor's. I have not found it here, but if you can find it, it ranks among the best!

One of the reasons I dislike living in the Metro area is the inability to get Vernor's. I've gotten it everwhere in the country except for the New York area. Kitchen Market in Chelsea sometimes has it by the bottle. Supposedly the bar Motor City has it on tap. By FAR the best Ginger Ale I've ever had, you should try it if you've never had. When I go outside of the area, I've been known to drive back with cases of the stuff.

I recommend Blenheim Extra-Hot or Jamaican Ginger Beer, which is probably easier to find in one of those Park Slope roti joints.

I'm a huge fan of spicy ginger ale (beer?) and so am constantly on the search as well... there's a jamaican place on the north side of 14th St bwtn 2nd & 3rd aves that makes their own, as well as other juices, that is pretty good. also, surprisingly, the jamaican patty chain on 14th btwn 5th & 6th impressed me - spicy!

as an aside, it's not hard to make your own... i've done it once or twice - just ginger root, water & sugar. the dining out NY times section had a recipe a while back. takes a fair amount of time to 'marinate', but allows you to have some on hand for emergency tummy aches - or the need for a Dark & Stormy!

My personal favorite these days is the GUS brand of Ginger Ale.

A lot of the gourmet food stores, Murray's cheese shop, etc seem to sell it.
